BLACKMAIL CATHOLIC

MILITARY AT CHENGTU DEMAND $1,500,000

LOAN FROM FATHERS.

BISHOP FLEES TO ESCAPE BEING KIDNAPPED..

Canart, Aprili

A now method of military blackmail was recently attempted here. It has surpassed in daring the audacity of all previous abtempts, of which there have been many. This time the intend-' ed victim was the Roman Catholic Mission and the attempted kidnapping of the Bishop, the Right Rev. J. Ronehouse, The only reason why the Bishop was not carried off was that he could not be found when armed soldiers of the 29th. Army twice visited the compound in Chengtu.

First, telogram, or a message in the form of a telegram, was received at the Mission purporting to be from. Nanking, and

by a certain General Ma, requesting" 180 Wan, or the mo dose sum of $1,500,000 A second message in the form of a tele gram was delivered by soldiers making the same request, but, with the addition, 18, the Bishop refuses, take him to gnol."

The Mission, through the acting French Consul, attempted to discover by what authority cams the demand for 180-Wan was reported that General Mn of the 20th Army was supposed to have secret instructions from Nanking to raise a war loan from the Mission. The Mission, did nothing further, not knowing just how strious was the demand...
