·ST. PATRICK'S BALL AT THE PENINSULA HOTEL.

-CHARITY AND GOODWILL AMONG IRISHMEN IN THE EAST.

"Thy people, now cxilce on many „g shore,,

Shall love and revere thee till time be no more, And the fire thou hast kindled shall ever burn, bright It warmth undiminished, undying its light,"

SEVEN HUNDRED GUESTS.

The first St. Patrick's Ball given in Hong Kong was held last night at the Peninsula Hotel. It proved so great a success that everyone who was present will hope that it may be an annual.

event.

The words "Cead mils faite "g hundred thousand woleomes' -which blazed in electric light over the main entrance to the hotel, were no empty boast. The welcome, warm and kindly, and the excellent arrangements which ebarneterised the hall will make it a function which will be remembered by all who were guests of St. Patrick's Society on March 17, 1831.

The decorations were novel and artistic and reflect grent credit on the Committee responsible, who had, besides the short time at their disposal, to contend with the high standard set by those who have 'superintended the decorations for many years for the St. George's and St. Andrew's Ball.

THE MAGIC OF BLARNEY CASTLE.

But what have St. George and St. Andrew to offer which can, rival the attraction of Blarney Castle and its faurats stone, the kissing of which gives the cloquence for which the Irish, even when they have no drink taken, are world famous? Boar's Head' or Haggis, the tongue indeed savours, but they cannot give smoothness and an endearing twist to its utterances.

Col. C. D. Myles, O.B.E., in the absence of the President of the Society, Sir Joseph Kemp, proposed the loyal toast, and that

of St. Patrick, gave in the course of his speech an interesting summary of the life of Ireland's Patron Saint.

The model of Blarney Castio wor very well carried out, the main in exactitude being the very merciful one of having the Blarney Stone placed, for this occasion, in such a position that it could be kissed without the necessity of the kisser being held by the knees head down- wards over the battlements,

THE SUPPER,

Supper was hold in the dining -room There were few-decorations- here except the standards grouped- behind the President's chair. These were the Free State Flag, the Irish Standard, St. Patrick's Cross, the Union Jack, the White Ensign, St. George's, St. Andrew's and St, David's fings, and the French and American Standards. The President's party was accom modated at a long table and other official guests at small tables in the near neighbourhood. During up- per a selection of Irish classical music was played by the Hoje! hand. The speeches were broad. cast.

The arrangements for the move to the supper-room were excellent, When the 6th dance began the members of the official party were naked to go into the special lounge provided for them on the sixth door and there take up their posi tions for the ceremonial entry, to the supper-room. When the dance ended they descended to the first floor by the lift furtherest away from the ball-room, and on reaching there moved in procession right along the first floor lounge And so into the dining room.

The official supper party was na follows:-

THE DECORATIONS.

The decorations were unusually attractive. Not very much except the Free State fag, the Irish Stan dard and St. Patrick's Flag ar. ranged at the end of the room, and the shields of the four provinces of Ireland, Ulster, Münster, Leinster and Connaught, over the doorway, had been done by way of decorat ing the rose roo:), but the schieme

At 11.20 p.m. a bar of the National Anthem announced the Loyal Toast which was given by Col. C. D. Myles, O.B.E. When this had been duly honoured Col.. Myles rose again to propose the toast of "The Beloved Memory of St. Patricks."

Addressing the assembly Colonel Myles said:

In the absenen of our President,. Sir Joseph Kemp, it falls to me to propese the toast of the 'Patron Saint.

Before I am after giving you the Tonet, may I say a few words in regard to the formation of the Society:

The wisdom of the Committee in losing the invitation lists early and thus limiting the number of guests was seen in the pleasurable amount of floor space available for dane ing, and everyone enjoyed them. selves thoroughly.
