A solemn ceremony took place in the Great Hall of the Hong Kong University yesterday when members of the University Court, Senate, graduates and undergraduates stood in silence as a tribute to the me mory of the late Sir Charles Eliot, the first Vice-Chancellor of the University.

A Great Scholar,

I will not dwell upon the details of Sir Charles Eliot's remarkable

career.

He was a great scholar nd great gentleman. To those who knew him he was an unfailing source of joy, for his mind was stocked with all sorts of queer and interesting things and his wit, though piquant, was ever kindly. Looking back over this University's, troubled history, I sometimes won- der whether the institution would have survived the dangerous years of its neglected infancy, had it

The jury, after more than an hour's deliberation, could not agree ona verdiet. This means that the boy will have to undergo the or. deal of a second trial..

There can be no sentence of death

passed, even if the jury bring in n verdict of guilty.

It was Mr. Justice Avory, the joldest judge of the High Court, who

tried the youngest prisoner who has over stood in the dock of the Old

Bailey on this or any other charge,

Ocurt Stormed. Women stormed the court to lis ten to the trial. They seemed to be everywhere. Two women wore in the jury box, women sat in the crowded enclosure at the back of the great dock, behind counsel, and in the public gallery.

But there were two who stood cat from the rest as the legal duel

went on all day. They were the mothers of these boy and girl lovers.

The governor of Brixton Prison brought about the meeting between

the mother and her boy after the 'case ended. · All day long he had sat beside the boy, in the" dock.

For once Mr. Justice Avory care into-court to hear the jury's ver- dict without the dreaded black cap in his hand, Trencey stepped nervously to the centre of the dock and gripped the ledge with his. twitching fingers.

He heard the jury announce that they could not agree, and seemed puzzled. It was not until a warder touched him gently on the arm that he turned round and walked towards the ataircase leading. to the cells below. He looked through the glass panet of the dock' and stared into the face of his mo- thor.

The mother, in tears, appealed to the judge for permission to see her boy Mr. Justice Avory was sympathetic, but helpless. "It is a matter for the prison authori- ties," he said, quietly.

The prison governor nodded, and the meeting took place a few min- utes later in the "accommodation coll" behind the court. It was very brief. It did not last more than five minutes, but it consoled the

woman.

A few minutes later Thomas Treacey was taken back to Brixton.
