A MAGNIFICENT PERSONALTY,
ENTHUSIASTIC FIRST NIGHT
AUDIENCE.
I is, perhaps, her magnificent personality which is your firat im- pression of Daine Clara Batt as she sweeps regally upon the stage. You have been waiting, being entertain- ed in the meanwhile very charming-
ly by her neiue and her consort,
for the entry of Britain's Queen of Song, and, when at last the curtains part and she appears, clothed from head to foot in cloth of gold, you feel that should, she but bow and amile and pass out again, you would have been adequately ro warded, o magnificently does she combine in herself the person of the world-famous prima dona and the traditional gracious charm of English greatneNR.
This is in itself superb art, but there is far more. Clara Butt, when the applause had died down, announces in a hunky voice "for my first group I will sing Numbers- on the programme." She waits a moment, smiles at her nieco at the pinus, and throwing back her head with a querily gesture, breaks into song.
Organ-like Notes. On Saturday it was the dramatic tragedy of Gluck's Divinités du Strae, which served to introduce her to Hong Kong, and there could not have been one among the large audience who was not thrilled by those deep organ-like tones and the wonderful purity and roundness of
the high notes.

Closely following Mojien in the race for honours were Mono Maris, foriner U.F.A. star who revealed a beautiful mezzo-soprano voice as well as an ability to execute typi. cal Spanish dances with the grace and nerve of a voteran; Tom Patri. cola, famous dancing eccentric of musical comedy, vandeville and screen, and Antonio Moreno, forver matinee idol of the silent Alms who establishes himself as an outstand- ing performer in "takica."
Mojica has the rôle of a romnatic outlaw, banished from his native province by a tyrannieni dictator. However, he proves a thorn in the şide of his enemy, and the conflict- between them becomes particularly bilter when Mojica falls in love with Rosario, beautiful Spanish dancer, who also is beloved by the diotator..
