He said that there had en criticism of thair policy of dovelop ment at a time when the trade was in a state of depression. But any other policy, he asserted, would have been fatal. The only way to deal with the mass of questions re- ceived and put to practical uses the results of research was to proceed with workrooms as a counterpart to the inboratories. The decision to do so would be justified, perhaps nuch sooner than many dared to

The market has been featurologi during the past week, the only figures available being the stocks on estates and dealers' stocks in the Enst un the 31st October which show a decline of about 2,500 tons compared with the figures for the end of September.
Fluctuations have been insigni- ficant, and vaines are unchanged on the week. A little business was done at 1/16d, more for forward de- liveries, but yesterday the market looked rather tired, more sellers being in evidence than for some time past. There was also some

It is only too well-known that our industry is euforing, and suffering badly, from the long-con- tinued depression. I have oren heard pessimistes say that the cotton trade is finished. This is absurd, and I for one do not believe it, but what we in Lancashire are apt to forget is that the depression, is world wide, and we are passing through a phone from which we must ultimately emerge. Their future depended to a large extent on the application of science to the various processen of the in- dustry, and it was for them to make sure that the work of the Shirley Institute was not stunted or cur tailed by lack of adequate financial support. He expressed the asscoin- tion's appreciation of the grant of £1,000 a year from the Empire Cotton Growing Corporation and the gift of £1,500 in books for the library from the Carnegis United Kingdom Trustees,
