Messrs. Pentreath & Co. have kindly forwarded us the following report, dated, December 5, xe

Messrs. coived from

Hornby Hemelryk & Co.

ROCKET TRIP TO THE SUN

TEN WEEKS AT SEVEN

MILES A SECOND..

Sir James Jeans, the scientist, took his listeners on an imaginary trip to the sun during one of his broadenst lectures on the stars from the B.B.C.) to make a shadow

"Let us eul ourselves up"in" a rocket," he said, and persuade; someone to shoot us towards the Fairly sharp fluctuations have sun. Wo need only start, with been witnessed in both the English distance away from the earth

spood enough Carryuan shart. and New York markets' during the about seven miles a accond will do past week owing to the various-and the sun's huge gravitational conflicting rumours: received, from pull will do the rest. Amsterdam regarding the progress of the negotiations at present taking place.

We referred last week to dis agreement between Java producers regarding the continuance of the Java Trust. They havé, however, apparently settled their differences. as at a meeting held on Sunday in Amsterdam, the contract with the Trust was renewed.

On the news that negotiations were proceeding favourably, our markets advanced sharply on Tues: day, but on Tuesday night a sharp selback was seen in New York on Licht issuing a new estimate of the "European crop showing an increase over his last estimate of over half anillion tons, inclusive of Russin. Moreover, it was reported that Dr. Gutierrez, the head of the Cuban delegation at present in Amater dam, bad cabled unfavourably with reference to the attitude of Java. Another depressing factor is that Germany is reported to be desirous of exporting 800,000 tons of her forthcoming orop.

The actual Licht figures are as follows:-

Europe without Russia: 8,255,000 tours, increase 270,000 tons.

Russia: 9,000,000 tons, increase 240,000 tone.

It is very difficult at present to Forecast the trend of prices. Flue tuations depend so much on the news received regarding the 'pro- gress made by the Chadbourne coin- mittee, and it behores one to accept the various reports with reserve.

The negotiations on the Continent will probably take considerable time unless the Conference breaks down completely. The problem which the Chadbourne Comunittee is called apon to solve bristles with difficut ties, and we are not over sanguiue as to the successful conclusion of the discussions,

Our New York correspondents cablo Inst night that news from Amsterdam is the dominating fac- tor, and the tenour of advices is generally favourable.

There is no more loyal section of the British Empira than the native population of the West Indies, That loyalty has been stimulated by an intenso devotion to British games To-day it is the ambition of every young West-Indian, to model himself on the English cricketers who visit his island. To look like Lord Tennyson or Amse he is pre- pared to sacrifice even the magni- fcent head of curly woolly hair which was once the pride of his dusky beloved. This flattery of imitation has given rise to a new industry in the West Indies. Whereas our own hairdressers do a roaring trade: in permanent wavos for young men, in Kingston, in Trinidad, in the Barbadoes, the English traveller will see every- where the sign: Tonsorial Artist; Permanent Straightening Guaran

· ́tood,"

The whole journey takes about ten weeks. Even in the first few seconds of the Journey we notice that the sun getting bluer and the sky blacker. ··

"Looking at the earth its surfnGE appears dim and blurred. That is because it is seen through a thick layer of air clouds and dust.

The face of the moon looks strangely clear, and sharp-cut by comparison. The reason is that it has no atmosphere, and as a con- sequenoo no rain, fog, clouds or dust to blur our vision. We see no cities, fields, or forests. We are poking on a dead world.

The oldest inhabitant of the British Isles celebrated her 110th birth on December 4. She is the Hon. Katherine Plunkett, of Bally masenplan, in the Irish Free State,. born in the parish of Kilsaran, near Dundalk; whilo her father was coctor there, Miss Plunkett'a earliest. recollection is of having sat on the Knoe of Sir Walter Scott when he visited Dublina in 1825 Miss Kathe rine Plunkett, the eldest of five sister and the only survivor, has 'been confined to her bedroom for some time, but for several years after she had passed her 100th birth day she was a familiar figure, in the district, and every Sunday drove to church in hor coacli-and-four. She has never ridden in a motor- car, and recalls the time when the first train in Ireland was considered very dangerous, She was in earlier thing of an artist, ^ld. the walls of her house contain of her picture. A musician and patron of the opera, she has travel led extensively in all parts of the world; but she does not like the wireless and will not have it in her house.
