CRICKET CLUBS AND PLAYERS,
THE PROSPECTS OF THE SERVICES TEAMS.
R. ABBIT ON SUGGESTED VISIT BY AUSTRALIANS,
It was with much interest that I rend Mr. Udy's remarks, at the Kowloon Cricket Club meeting a few days ago, I confess that I admire that gentleman's enthusiasm greatly. He was, I believe, him- inter-State ericketer in Bel! an Australia and has batted against the bowling of Ernest Jones
think ("Broken-Hill Jones," I they called him in the old days) at times with profit and at times with much pain. At least so I was told, and my informant certainly seemed i a position to know But while agreeing with Mr. Udy that every thing possible to promote cricket in the Colony should be done, 1 am afraid I differ from him as regards his proposel. Frankly I consider that the visit of such a as he contemplates atrong side would be a farce in the cricket line. And that isn't going to do the game any good. Let us look the thing squarely in the face. I do not think cricket in Hong Kong is anywhere near as good as it was in 1912, when I first saw it. I am speaking, be it understood. of a Colony's side and not of the game generally here. I freely admit that my opinion is liable to be discount ed by n liberal allowance for the «Jaudaior temporis acti" spirit that one gets after a good many, seasons. But, be that as it may, it is, to my mind, cerinin that our interport form is the equivalent of
a medium Club at home and nothing more. We could take on the Somer set Stragglers, Devon Dumplings or the Martlets, but a really strong Club like Hamstend-their best oleven of course--would simply And ao, wipe the floor with us. what is the good of having Test, Match people along, unless one has a side to put up against them i
this until I can get some more in- formation. By the way, some of my readers may be interested to- hear that Commander Pelly, Inte of the Cornflower, is making runs for the B.N. Barracks at Keyham, while Father Purcell and J. B. Dalison are playing sometimes for the United Services at Portsmouth,
