men.

"I am curious to know why, if the French authorities contemplar ed any action in regard to the ridiculous charge which, was made against my friend and myself, they did not take it while we were in Calais.

Miss Bagot is now away from England, but I can say for coth of us that we are not worrying.

I have no present intention of going to Boulogne to discuss the matter, and I would like to know why, if an offence is alleged to have

committed in Celaie, should have been tried and sen- tenced in "Boulogne without our knowledge."*

Rhyming Slang is the dullest of all kinds of slaug. There seems little point in saying "Shove that Cain and Abel nearer instead of hove that table," or in, saying "bale of lead" instead of head. I suspect. Rhyming Slang to be a thieves' pat ter, and to have had its origin in the desire to talk in a which could not be easily under

Sometimes stood if overheard. Rhyming Elang is at the root of otherwise incomprehensible expres sions. For instance, one synonym for "chum" is "china." "This is an. abbreviation of "china plate" rhyming slang for "mata." Techni eal terms suggested a few good slang expressions; for instance, "Gone die," which means mentally weak, and is derived from the"tele- phone signaller's term meaning disconnected. I have compared the two glossaries. The older one is larger because it includes "narai slang as well; and I noticed that while that of Mr. Brophy and Mr. Partridge includes some expres sions that are not in the larger glossary they omit others.

Some of these omissions I regrett- ed. "To beetle off," for example (Air Force slang), suggesting the hum and buzz of the cockchafer, "Got you taped," meaning I've taken your measure, was too good to lose, and so was "a rainbow," an ironical term meaning a rein- forcemeat or recruit arriving after the storm is over. I missed also,. "to chuck a chest" or "to throw one's weight about" (to

Of course, most of the slang created during the war originated French in attempts to talk "Napoo" (no more, all gone, finish- ed), "You're late, breakfast na- pac," is, of course, derived from Il n'y a pas de plus, a phrase with which our men were only too sadly familiar. It could also be used in contexts, which made it clear that it meant a particular article much in demand. A cottager who had egga to sell, if not asked for "erfe," would, when asked for two no- 2008, probably produce eggs, and at an estaminet a request for "napoo" would usually procure & glass of wine. A "bongo boosh"? is an obvious and mild corruption; Spirits being forbidden at the front, the usual way of getting round the diffeulty was to ask for café avec: finally "avo came to stand wha Aceneral term to

(Allez tout de suite), "Japan" for du pain, and similar corruptions are not likely to live long; indeed, I should be surprised if they are still alive. The test of good slang is that it ultimately creeps' into the dictionary.
