The dif- ference between those which the men. wrote for themselves and those which enthusiastic admirers of their gallant spirits composed for them, is marked. The editors add that, contrary to what is generally supposed, only. a smail proportion of the songs are improper in subject or i language. In this way, they write, "they differ from the normal conversation of soldiers amongst themselves, which was technically obscene in almost every sentence." The obscenity was merely technical, because the words were used me chanically. They go on to make a judicious observation upon the vocabulary of obscenity. There are words which, owing to their brutal savour, are used for cursing.. and words relating to physical functions, which, though coarse, are neither blasphemous nor gadis- tic. Convention at present de bars them from polite conversation, but there would be no corruption of morals if they were admitted." (Continued on Page 2)
