WHY ARE WE SO

SIR JAMES PARR SAYS "TELL THE WORLD'
The English are much too re- ticent about England. No other country can compare with England
in human interest, but foolishly you do not tell the world. What a wealth of attractions there are here."
This was the comment made by Sir James Parr, late High Com missioner for New Zealand, in opening the Travel Association Ex- hibition of posters and photographa of health and pleasure restorts at Hastings.
Why "Bad Form "7" Why is it bad form," asked Sir James," for Englishmen to talk about their own country, and about themselves Even in these modern times, y u do not bear Englishmen boosting their own country or blow- ing their own trumpėta.
No other country can compare with England in human interest, and very foolishly you do nos tell the world about your great wealth of attraction.
"Take London," Sir James con- tinued. "What a history has Lon. don; what a world of romanes is here. Not merely in population is London the greatest city in the world. Where is there to be found a little park to equal the delicate beautics and inexpressible charm of St. James' Park; where in the world so splendid a lung as «Hyde Park? What country has such homes both great and small?
Hint to Government.
“As for England's countryside in summer, nothing on this earth quite equals its peepliar beauty. There is nothing on the Continent which makes such an appeal.
And we remember, too, that this is Shakespeare's country, and Mil- ton's and Burns and Cornwell's and Nelson's and Pitt's and Wilber- force's and Bernard Shaw's!
"Why not proclaim from the housetops the glories of Britain Why be selfish and keep these things only for yourselves! Share them. with the world, but, of course, at a price. In other words, advertise!" England made fifteen millions year out of tourists, continued Sir James, but France made seventy- five millions The French Govern ment spent £300,000 a year, in. ad- vertising, Germany spent more, |while the British Government spent £8,000 a year. He considered that the British Government should sub- sidise private subscriptions pound for pound subscribed up to, say, £100,000 Such a fund, in the hands of capable people, would bring millions to English resorts. Why did English people go to the Continent for the winter when they had their South Coast and the Cornish Riviera 1
1
"I marvel sometimes,” added Sir James, at the flight of English- men in winter time to the South of France and other. Mediterranean re- sorta. They go to escape the in- elemency of your horrible winters, it is said. I have sampled some of these places myself, and I have been instead I got rain, mist, and even Fold I went to get sunshine, and
snow.
Keep the money spent at foreign restorts in the pocket of England."

Discussing the coloured man's attitude to white women, the report atates that the negro, usually well dressed, generous with what money be has, a good singer and dancer, shows to advantage and makes n good impression on the girls in the "The present conditions under poor and overcrowded, district he which coloured seamen enter Liver frequents. the most serious aspect of the problem is the unemployability of the children. Teachers report the half-castes to be rather below the average in telligence and aptitude even as compared with the low type of white children in the schools they attend.
