HOSPITALS CROWDED BY HEAVY CASUALTIES..

The present civil war in China is exacting a heavy toll in wounded soldiers. Up to the middle of last month, more than 20,000 of the, Government troops have been sent down from the front. Now, the number is doubled, making a grand total of more than 10,000. Consider- ing the large number of wounded that have poured in the last two days, it appears that the figure will double, many times more before the fighting is over. According to German military expert, the long casualty list is unavoidable because this is the first real modern war China has ever fought. Besides, the Government forces have been on the offensive..

Forty base hospitals, including one general hospital and nine mili. tary hospitals, bare boen establish- ed in various places to take care of the wounded soldiers. They are distributed in the following manner: Hsuchow 6, Pengpu 5, along the Tsin-Pu Line below Pengpu 3, Tainan 1, Nanking 3, Chinkiang 1, Changchow, Wusih 1, Soochow 2, Hangchaw 3, Wahan 8, Wuhu, 1, Anking 1,Yangchow. 1, Nanchang 1, and Changsha 2 The hospitals are so arranged as to accommodate 1,000 patients cach

Treatment at the Front.

Before the wounded soldiers are sent back to the base hospitals, they are, of course, given as much medical treatment at the front as is possible under the circumstances. With every regiment is a medical unit, consisting of stretcher bearers and ambulance corps and five or six dressing-stations..

The wounded are picked up at the front, and after their wounds are hurriedly dressed at the dress- ing stations, they are immediately. transported to the field hospitals further back where they are operat ed on when necessary. There are 16 field hospitals besides one at tached to each division. Then the wounded are transported to Hsu chow where they are more carefully treated. However, as Hsuchow is the first station behind the front, the daily turnover there must neces- sarily be very great. Therefore, only those who are too weak to travel are kept there. The others are immediately sent down the line in order to make room for the new comers that are flowing in incessant- ly from the front.

The wounded are transported by special army medical trains where there are railways and by motor- care where there are motor roads. Otherwise, boats and donkey carts are resorted to. In places where nothing is available, the wounded. are borne on stretchers for miles. (Continued on nest Column.) -
