Hong Kong, July 18.
We are most grateful to your" Excellency for this visit which is evidence of the kindly interest your Excellency takes in the poor women and children, thus conferring great benefit on the community. We are also grateful to the Hon. Mr. A E. Wood, the Secretary for Chinese Affairs, and to Lady Chow, Mrs. Kotewall and Mrs. Teo for their monthly visits, during which they impart to the inmates of the in- stitution much valuable advice and [TO THE EDITOR OF THE HONG KONG guidance. To the permanent direc tors, too, our thanks are due for their unfailing assistance and co- operation.
In the performance of our duties, we have observed the rules and traditions of the institution. About three years ago realising the in portance of giving the women and girls of the Po Leung Kuk, who generally come from the poorer classes and have not had any educa tion, a chance of earning a liveli. hood when they leave the institu tion, Mrs. Southern, în collaboration with airs. Katewall, made arrange ments for teaching them some handiwork. During these years Mrs. Kotewall has been assiduous in her attendance and ja personally teach ing the girls sewing and knitting.
Afy fellow directors and I are no less keen on this important work: we have recently engaged a lady teacher who comes in the day time to teach the girls sewing and knit ting besides an elementary Chinese education. The twelve directors for the current year have, among themselves, subscribed 81,000 for 1(4) Prelude and Fugue in C the purchase of materials for the Minor (Bach), (b) Bourse purpose, so that the fands of the (Bach); Mr. C. CONTROL OF SAVINGS BANKS.
DAILY PRESS."]
SIR,-Through the medium of
your columns, I trust I may be per mitted to ventilate some grievances against the malpractices of some of the Savings Banks in Hong Kong."
As one of the many depositors who have sustained heavy losses in consequence of a recent failure, I have been looking closely into the inner workings of these banks, and feel amazed at the fact that they can apparently play ducks and drakes with savings entrusted to the directors, without supervision by the Hong Kong Government.

It must be borne in mind that the bulk of the deposits are taken from the poor and aged, and manual labourers. In short, these savings constitute the proverbial widow's mite and hard earnings of the lower classes. How is it the Government have taken ne effective measures to afford them protection? As I understand it, the leading banks-like the Hong Kong and, Shanghai Banking Corporation, the Chartered Bank of Australis, India and China, and the National City of New York-bave always taken the greatest precaution to see that funds from the Savings Department are. well invested and secured
