MUSSOLINI AND THE ACADEMY.

''INCIDENT' OVER A

PORTRAIT,

Portuguese and Italian diplomats in London are too polite to say anything, unkind about the Royal Academy.

Their thoughts, on the other hand, are their own property.

But, everyone knows there has been an "incident." The "inci- dent" concerns no less a personage than Signor Mussolini, as well as the brilliant young Anglo-Portu- guese artist, Mr. H. Medina, who went from London to paint the portrait of "Il Duce."

For five mornings the Italian Dictator sat to the twenty-eight- year old genius who had succeeded, "where nearly every other artist in the world had tried and failed, in making Mussolini sit for his por trait.

Splendid,

Throughout the sittings Mussolini attended to the ordinary business of the day-but finally the portrait was accomplished.

"Splendid:" said the Dictator, and autographed a photograph of the painting with a tribute to its Geator. Mussolini's entourage all said it was the best portrait of him ever painted.

Mr. Medina had an idea. The Royal Academy! Why not? It would be a sensation in London.

Mr. Medina pointed out to Signoring Mussolini that Portugal and Itals were allies with Britnin in the war. Mussolini hesitated and then made s generous gesture.

Let it go to London," he said. The precious portrait was shipped with full diplomatic henours. Scot- land-yard may or may not have been informed. Probably not.

The Italian and Portuguese Embassies were delighted

"No Room For It.**

The painting was sent to Burling- ton House in good time for the exhibition. The gesture was com plete.

A few days later it was returned. We are sorry, but there is no room for it."

That was the end of the story. The painting was rejected because in that forest of masterpieces there was no vacant glade.

Mr. Medina smiled. The Portu guese Embassy smiled. The Italian Embassy smiled.

Yet Signor Mussolini said.in public that here was something more beautiful than books and paintings and that was gina ani aeroplanes.

PROFESSOR'S RACY

TRANSLATION.

A remarkable rney translation of the Book of Isaiah is published by the National Adult School Union. The Prophet's words are given in poetic form and in colloquial Eng. lish which will surprise readers.

Isaiah protests against efforts to make him "a mob-leader," declares the vintage will be "a wash-out" and utters woe on the mighty "mix- ing cocktails."

The new translation is published with the object of making the Old Testament more easily understand- able to modern minds.

Literary elegance is admittedly sacrificed to clearness of expression and everyday language.
