"He can live without love,

But civilisel man cannot live without

dining."

Owen Meredith.

He used to be rude about the cold joint and allude to it as "Ichabod "" And poke the tomatoes about to find one that wasn't squashy, and leave the apple tart's pastry on his plate and talk about Eeavy handed cooks

and...

Well you know how things used to

be on Mondays...till you thought

of that shattering retort,

All right, you buy me a Frigidaire

then!

Of course, he did in the end-and now Monday sees Ichabod metamor- phused into vol-au-vent, since 'cook's pastry has miraculously acquired a flaky lightness (only because he chills it in Frig daire before popping

it in the oven), and the salad always seems fresh picked, it's so cool and crisp, and everybody wants to know: the secret of your household market ing because they've never enten such tender steak, my dear" (which, of course, is due to Frigidaire agitin), and he swears Frigidaire, would be worth twice its price if only for the difference it makes to beer, and

we could go on for hours like this. but how about you having a Frigidaire of your own? The very latest models, filled with Hydrator and Cold Control that produces frozen sweets. ice creams in a jiffy, can be installed in your kitchen for a very small am. Fully automatic. Dead silent. Costs only a few cents a week to run. Start- seeing about yours by asking

SEVERAL OUTSIDERS RETURN HANDSOME DIVIDENDS: BIG FIELDS AND

FAST TIMES.

ORLANDO'S GREAT PERFORMANCE ON SATURDAY.

{BY" MORNING DEW," "

Brilliant sunshine favoured racegoers on Saturday when the postponed second day's racing of the Whitsun Meeting was held.

"

"

"Favourites shared honours with outsiders, and dividends, on the whole, were satisfactory, His Excellency the Governor, Sir William Peel, K.B.E., C.M.G., and Lady Peel were among the interested spectators.

There were some thrilling finishes during the afternoon and on two occasions the protest flag was hoisted, but such protests were not sustained.

Honours were fairly even among the jockeys, Mr. Harriman being the most successful with two wins, two second places nad a third. Mr. Rozä had two victories and on thres occasions was' third. Mr. Heard had a couple of winners and two third places. Mr. Ip Kui Ying won the Novice event and, in addition, secured two second places and a third.

The outstanding feature of the meeting was Mr. Harriman's fine riding on Orlando in the ninth race. By this success, Mr. Harriman has helped to convince a large number of punters that Orlando is a useful customer and can be properly controlled in`a race. Believers in Or- lando's power were well rewarded by the pari-mutuel,

THE RACING.

Crocodile Stakes.

No less than 13 ponies faced the starter here, and Osiris (Mr. Heard)

was a shade more favoured than Shanghai Beau, Sonny Boy being next in demand.

IN USE

Billiards shot away to a fair start. New Year's Eve led up to' start and led into the straight, the Rock, when Monterey Bay took where Sonny Boy took command.command. Empress Hall drew level He was strongly challenged by with the Bay just after entering the Thracian (Mr. Charles), but Mr. straight and, after a thrilling race, Harriman kept his mount in front Monterey Bay was beaten by a long enough to catch the judge's short head. New Year's Eve was eye. Thracian might have done many lengths behind and was better if he had not been subjected almost beaten out of a place by to so much urging in the straight. Kirribilli

Osiris, the favourite, just man- aged to out Billiards from third place:

Cheung Chau Plato.

Royal Flush's victory in this event was never in doubt. San Francisco got off to a flying start, but Royal. Flush drew level with him in the straight and eventually won by two lengths:

Young Pretender, who was left at the start, made up a good deal of ground at the end to get third place.

Lantao Handicap "A" Class. Seven ponies faced the starter here and Spearmint was a red-hot favourite. He won by a length from Windsor Stag, who was again half a.length ahead of Herodom, The last-named, ridden by Mr. Ip Kui Fing, came up a bit late, otherwise a different story might have been bold.

Spearmint's ran, although successful, was far from impressive.

Whitman Plate.

Only three candidates accepted herd and Nationalist II. won easily from Chesapeake Bay, who was again comfortably ahead of Pepper- corn. The last named led over the first half mile, when Nationalist II. took "the lead and was never head- ed again. At the village Chest- peake Bay looked like closing on the winner, but in the straight Nationalist drew away to win com fortably.

Lantao Handicap "B" dias...

Lantao Handicap "O" Class, One of the biggest thrills of this season was the finish of this race, when, three candidates faished in a line. The fancied ponics were all beaten and the race in the straight was between Mount Elburz, Campbell and Peter. Guerney. The three finished in what appeared to be a dead straight line much to the excitement of punters.” The official verdict was that Mount Elburz.won by a head and that Campbell was a neck ahead of Peter Querney.

Lama Flate..”

Piccy paid a handsome dividend to his supporters when he won this event. Zephyr. (Mr. Heard) was favourite, but he was beaten out of a place. Grenadier also was much in demand and, candidly, he was lucky to get third, Mr. Harriman's horsemanship being largely reapon- sible for his getting a place. White Star, ridden by Mr. Proulx, secured second place, getting a short head" verdict from Grenadier.

Whit Monday Consolation Plate.

Four ponies-One Third, Orlando, Three Clubs and King's Counsel started here. One Third carried the bulk of the money, but disappointed badly."
