You know more than I do, and Srst arpac
one day you will do something hig.”
Everybody is asking me why my sister Amy undertook the dight, and how she came to think of auch a thing
I will tell you. I would like to tell you because ever 80 many peo- ple think Amy is making the fight either for the thrill of it or just to achieve a sort of nine days' inime. That is a terribly wrong thing to say of Amy.
"Do Something Big!”.
I am sorry to say that he is now ill in hospital. He injured his arm when turning the propellor of an airplane.
Girl With No Nerves.
without nerves.
Father says that Amy is a girl
I am afraid that until a few
years ago Amy regarded me as a young sister who must be put in her place at times, but now I seem to have made up" for the difference in our ages and we are real pais as well as sisters.
Amy will think me sentimental when she reads that little bit, and she loathes sentiment.

Amy was doing well as secretary to a firm of solicitors, but she deed to cling to that idea of doing cided that there was not enough "something big." and when ske scope for her, and so she threw up next came home she called a fami her post and told us that she wouldly conference and announced to make a career for herself in avia father: "If Fam to make a name tion.

That is why Amy is flying to
Australia.
Perhaps you will find it difficult to believe, but Amy was actually bored to tears with her first fight in an airplane?
Bored By First Flight. She made it in a spirit of dare devilry and curiosity, I was then thirteen years old, and one day Amy said: "They are giving five- shilling trips at the aerodrome. Shall we go up !"
I said that mother and father would have a fit if they knew about it. That aroused the dare. devil in Amy. We sneaked out of the house, saying that we were going for a walk. I was feeling guilty, but Amy was as cool as an iceberg when we made a short flight round the aerodrome.
It was all over in a few minutes, and Amy's comment on landing was: "Well, there's nothing in it to make a fuss about, but it would be really interesting to have, an airplane of your own."
Then, later, Amy began to get restless as aaeeretary. She joined a Aying club in London and used to spend all her pocket money on fights at Stag. Lane Aerodrome, Hendon.
She put the maps away and said: "Now let us talk about getting a machine for the flight.”.
Getting a Machine. Fathor said that he would have to think it over. Next day Amy returned to London. During the next few weeks father had letter after letter from Amy in which she said she would never be happy until father gave her her chance.
soon.'
Would you believe it? Father says he only just managed to get one kiss.
Amy will be just the same when she comes back.
Next to sentiment I think Amy dislikes small talk, meaningless silly conversation you hear some times in the drawing-room.
When she was a little girl she showed this.
She was the boatess to a number of other little boys and girls who had "been invited to tea. Amy listened for while to them. after
tea and then began reading. Mo-
ther was shocked and reproved
her for neglecting her guests. Amy put the book aside and said, "Very well, mother, I will listen to the silly things they say."
It was during her schooldays that we first realised how adventure ap- pealed to her.
A Good Swimmer.
She made up her mind to be a good swimmer, but father and mo ther were always on tenterhooks during holiday time" at the sanside because the swam out further than
girl of her age should, and laughed at the idea of danger.
Amy has won swimming prizes for years now, and has enough cer- tificates to cover the walls of her bedroom.
Eventually father surrendered and bought her the machine she la using on this flight to Australia, Her first long-distance flight might easily have been her last She flew from London to Hull and landed in 1 sixty-mile-an-hour gale. The weather was so bad that the officials at the Hull aerodrome more or less forbade her to make
Later she took up rowing, und the return fight at once, but Amys just as heedless of danger. had promised the people at Stag Ehe would take a boat out when the boatmen had warned her that Lane she would be back at a cer-

till it pleased her to return. laughed, and we had to sit still
I have tried to tell you how Amy came to think of making the Bight, and now I will try to show you why we all have been so confident that she would succeed,
JI
If Amy says she will do s.thing" she does it."
I am timid sometimes, but Amy is a daredevil. I am angry some times, and like most girls I laugh The craze for flying really got and I cry, but Amy is always the hold of her. It got hold of her same even-tempered darling, never so badly, in fact, that she used to really cross and too jolly ever to go to the nerodrome every morning' be dull.
The war came and we had ter- sible air raids at Hull
Amy actually looked forward to them because they meant she would act have to go bed at the usual hour; but would be allowed to sit up till the "All Clear" was given. One week we had an air raid every night and Amy played carda through every raid and talked of the number of rooks she had brought down with her air-gun.
