GOSSIP FROM THE SHARE MARKET.
PREPARING FOR THE JUNE SETTLEMENT.
FREE ADVICE FOR INVESTORS.
L
[By "KUFAN."]
The continual drop in the rate of exchange is bringing "more money to the share market, and appareatly there is now a class of investors
who do not look at all at the return given by their holdings, but only at the possible rise in the price of shures Bold. In other words, the only thing they look for is capital appreciation, with no thought for any return in the way of interest.
During the week under review, Banke, Unions, Electrics, Lands, and Cements all showed an appre ciable rise. Of these, Banks and Unions, are "still much in demand and probably will see higher rates yet. Lands and Electrics are much sought after, and there is a pecu- "larly strong demand for Cements at the moment, though nobody seems to know why; unless-Dame Rumour has been busy again.
I have had, many queries during the week as to what I think will happen before the June Settlement. Candidly I do aos anticipate any difficulty, because there is so much cose money available, and further, at the moment, there appears to be general confidence, in the market. Solid stocks, paying regular divi- aends, will probably not move very much one way or the other, but the
some of the reaction on speculative kind of shares may be considerable
more
There is no denying that a cer- tain amount of "wild" speculation has been going on for some time, and there is also no evading of the fact that certain stocks have been rashed up on the flimsiest pretext. My advice those who are feeling uncertain about the June Settle- ment is to sell their holdings and take a little interest in the Settle- ment as possible. The recent rise in practically every stock should en- able many to sell at a profit.
If there should be another crash, as in 1925, would it not be better to be in possession of solid stocks rather than stocks where the inter- est returned is negligible t
HONG KONG BANKS-A few shares changed hands during the week at 81,500 to $1,510, and buyers are still asking for further shares at the latter figure.
UNIONS have improved to a buring rate of 2475 ex dividend, after sales had been registered at $300 cum dividead.
WHARVES are inquired for at $178.50.
*
|
PROVIDENTS have sellers at $5.80, and I heard on Saturday that sellers were prepared to sell even under this rate.
*
+
HONG KONG HOTELS have sellers at $12.30. after sales had been put through during the week at $12.78.
•
HONG KONG LANDS are wadł ed at $87.25. At the opening of the week quite a number of shares were put through at $86, but the rate gradually mounted to $87.50.
HONG KONG REALTIES have sellers at $10.75 and possibly buyers
will pay $10.50.
*
*
*
HUMPHREYS have improved to 37, and at this figure a few shares changed hands.
•
TRAMWAYS are a shade better, after sales had taken place at $20,40 to 820.60. They closed with buyers at $20.50 and there are further sellers at $20.60.
DAIRY FARMS were done at $24.90 to $26.95, and farther small. lots could be probably placed at the
atter figure.
EWQS are at the moment very quiet, the quotation being Tis. 13.00 buyers and Tls. 13.70 sales.

In consequence of the movement for the promotion of the use of Chinese native goods, weaving mills are doing fairly well. Demand for Chinese clath by the Chinese of Malaya has become very brisk. To cope with the growing demand, the mills have engaged more workers. 1.960 During last month, over chests of locally-woven cloth were exported to the Straits Settlements and the Dutch Indies, this being an increase of 260 chests over the cor- responding period of last year, Demand by the country districts is also healthy.

New York markets, and this must be attributed to heavy Cubau hedge selling and to an entire lack of demand for refined sugar. ·
Those who have written for in formation last week will find an- awers to their queries below:- V.N.A.-At present quotations, the return is about five per cent, but on the whole I would not hold these shares very much longer if I were in your place.
The dividend was announced last year in July, and presumably it will be the same this year, I am afraid I cannot say how the company has been faring in com. parison with former years, hence cannot guess what the dividend will be.

KL.L.--I advise you to sell this stock 2-1 also advise you to sell these shares. With regard to the latter, I notice that you state call cost paid." If this means at the time you bought your shares, well and good, but if the call has not been paid set, better attend to the matter at once, otherwise you run the risk of losing your shares. ESPILI-1-Yes but you may have a long wait. This stock has been to my mind, artificially "boosted" by a certain syndicate, who ap pear to be weakening. at the moment. If you have shares. You can lose nothing by holding on. If you buy a rapidly rising stock, you might find that you got in at the height of the "boom." I many add, however, that the general opinion seems to be that prices will go higher. ARCHITECT-I can see no reason for a rise in price by September, and candidly cannot recommend you to buy forward at the figure "you mention. If you have faith in the stock, the obvious thing to do is to buy cash shares. Buying now for September is too much like speculation for my liking.

The feeling in American trade circles is that Japan will take drai tic steps to reduce the heavy stocks held in Japan: The stocks at Japanese ports on April 18 totalled 82,000 bales, compared with 70,000 at the end of March and 58,000 bales on March 15.

Close New York Boturday-July $9.840 September $3.84c., Novem ber. $3.840.
The genera idea prevailing L week ago was that prices had fallen low enough, and a revival of trade demand has beca expected in this country now that the Budget is out of the way. These hopes, however, have not so far been realised, and consequently those who had made purchases in the anticipation of im proved prices have been liquidating their contracts.
May liquidation in New York is already in full swing, and it is only talk of a possible increase of the tariff to 2.20c. which has led to tenders being fairly well absorbed.
A certain amount of liquidation in London of the May position has already taken place in anticipation of tenders. At the moment, how- ever, it is very difficult to gauge the open interest in May, but we think that the May position is fairly well liquidated..
