"Condemned," with Ronald Col man in the star role, is one of the most dramacie" talkies" ever acer and heard in Hong Kong. The scene is laid in Devil's Island, that grind French penal settlement off the const of French Guiana, where Aichel (Ronald Colman), a thief, and Jacques (Louis Wolheim), a murderer, with many others, have been sent for varying periods. After her marriage with Mr Sher- barn Hopkins, Miss Joyce made her debut on the stage in Ziegfeld's Follies. Her stage career, she says, was one of sadness resulting from unfavourable Press notices, and only assuaged by the flowers of her adairers.
Mr. Grantham mentioned that "After all, flowers mean a lot to the evidence in respect of all the girl when critics pan her."

DEAD LOVERS UNITED.
TRAGEDY OF ANTIST WHO
STARVED.
A young Parisienne who hurled herself to death from a five-storey window, after kez brilliant artist lover had died of starvation, now lies buried beside him after A separation of nine years.
The paintings "which he vainly hawked through the streets of Paris are ow world famous, and three of them have realised more than £7,000.
The parents of Jeanne Hebuterte, the dead girl. knew that Amadio Modigliani, the Italian artist whom she loved, was penniless and pro. fligate. and opposed the couple's friendship.
The day that Modigliani died the girl cut off one of her curls, placed it in her lover's hand, and on re- turning from the cemetery flung herself from a window into the street.
Modigliani's friends paid for his modest grave, but Jeanne Hebu- terne's parents would not allow ber to be buried by the side of the man
she loved, and she was interred -with state in a-rich suburb.
Last month the Imperial Musenm at Tokyo paid £1,200 for one of the dead artist's pictures, another fetched £4,000 in Paris during the summer, and a third was sold to an American collector for £2,000.
Jeanne Hebuterne's father bas died, and her mother has at long" last allowed the girl's body to be aid with that of her ill-smered lover.
Their graves lie side by side in the Père Lachailo Cemetery in Paris.
