BRIGADE'S DIFFICULTY IN FIGHTING
THE OUTBREAK.
Some very outspoken comments were passed by a Fire Brigade. officer, at the inquest on the victims of the recent blaze at West Point. He said that tenements built with a wooden staircase aa the sole exit to the street. Wer dangerous" and altogether wrong from the fire point of view.
In this case four persona. threw themselves from upper floors to escape the flames, their one stairway down to the street having been burnt while they were asleep..
In reply to a juryman it was stated that joss stick and cracker shop proprietors were not required to provide chemical fire ex- tinguishers.
The hearing was adjourned, the Coroner being of opinion that the Building Authority should send a representative.

On re turning he found that the girl on the third floor had jumped without waiting for the jumping sheet.
