AFRICAN EVE PERFORMS BEST GALLOP TO DATE.

[By "MORNING DEW."]

African Eve, the Derby representative of the "Eve" stabié, of whore great things are expected in the forthcoming race meet- ing, did a wonderful gallop yesterday morning. The animal is a big and impressive-looking black, with a buge stride, and it had been known all along that he will be serious contender for honours in due course. Until yesterday morning, however, when the animal was stretched, it was not known that he was capable of such great speed when called 'upon....

His gallop yesterday will not be forgotten in a hurry, and on the strength of this performance alone African Eve might find `n number of followers when the big meeting comes round. His quar- ters were very even, and the pony did not finish at all badly,

Gay Cabellero put his best foot forward when he was tried out yesterday. He did a mile in 2.11.4, and could have done much better had he not been held.

The Tiger, with Mr. Harriman in the saddle, did a mile in 2.17.2, and eculd have reduced that by many seconds if Mr. Harri- man bad in the least pushed the animal, which was running con- vincingly. There are many who consider The Tiger a possible for the Derby, and on the strength of this animal's gallops so far, they are not far out.

I

Windsor Stag also did a good gallop, as his time below will show. The point which many people fail to realise in trying to pick possible Derby winners this year is the fact that. there are many ponics now in training which are of the best quality, and this "year more than the average number of good ponies have been im-

ported, and further that every stable possess a Ükely animal.

Mr. Ho Kom Tong's stable did not gallop yesterday, and de- tnis will appear in to-morrow's paper, as this owner-together with one or two others has chosen Thursday and Sunday as galloping days.

The times taken yesterday were as follows:

Mare money had been spent during the past year on build- ings and improvements of race- courses than in probably a decade before. This money had been main- ly spent by the board, and in duc course would be paid for gradually through investments on the tote by those who enjoyed the benefits, but in the meantime, the stimulus to improvement had been provided, and there was now not a single race- course where new schemes of im- provement and extension were not being devised.

EFFORTS TO IMPROVE STANDARD OF RINDING.

Before the opening of the racing season the Sians Racing Association decided to make an experiment during the first meeting, which was held at the Sports Club last month, This was to abolish whips, The result was regarded as highly satis factory, and the stewards consider ed that it ought to be continued for another meeting.

It has been decided to do so, but after that it is expected that the jockeys will be given their whips again. The idea is to try to im prove the standard of riding. Many of the jockeys use their whips in discriminately, and there question that races have been re- gularly lost in consequence ́ ́of wrong whipping.

It is hoped that from the experi ence of riding during two meetings without whips, and being trained to make use of the hands and kneee, an improved standard will be at tained by the jockeys. But many of us have our doubts.
