There has been a slight demand for raw silk since Friday last when The 135 unles were sold. prices were H.K.81,100 for No. 13/35, H.K.8910, for No. 13/15 Best 1 and H.K.8934 for No. 14/16.

The Central Bank of Chinn notes were quoted during the week-end ninety-four per cent, of their face value. The exchange rate for the was about Hong Kong currency 81.27 Canton for the Hong Kong dollar.

Quotations of both rice and fire wood have gone down as supplies are abundant. Firewood of com- mon quality is sold at $1.60 per picul while rice of common grade is sold at nine catties and a half the dollar.

Arrivals of wolfram ores are short but prices remain firm. The latest quotations vary from HK. $62 to .K. 866 per picul. Demand by foreign merchanta is not brisk at present, and large, arrivals are expected very shortly.

The cotton yatu market during the week-end was disappointing and prices fell by two to three- dollars, demand still being limited. Telegraphic advices from Shanghai indicate that the quotations there have also dropped by about two dollars per bale.

The Canton Government is crect- ing a $2,000,000 zement factory at Saichuen, in the cutskirts of the city. The building will be com- pleted in eighteen months. Machi- nery costing H.K. $60,000 has arrived. It is estimated that the factory will produce 1,200 kega daily, the raw material will be im- ported from Yingtak and Fayuen. The old cement factory in Honan produces 108.000 kegs of cement annually but the amount is for from sufficient to meet the demand of contractors and highway build- ..ers, and at present, foreign cement ia imported in very considerable quantities.

One of our New York correspon Cents says that many manufactur- ers admit that present prices are low, and that it would seem that the chief obstacle to an advance is uncertainty regarding the immedi late future owing to recent events in the financial world, whilst the Japanese statistical position is also discouraging. The result is that manufacturers have been more in- terested in disposing of their pre- sent stocks than in contracting for supplies of the raw material.

Our New York correspondents cable that Spot and Raw Silk for Tear delivery are in fair demand. There is also a moderate demand for finished silks, and the enquiry for thrown silk is improving. The futures market is now steady but dull.

REMINDERS OF ANCIENT COURT LIFE OF PEKING.

The motion picture story of the "Old Buddha,"

the Empress- Dowager Tsu Hai, has been banned Ly Peping officials, ", because it tends to exercise a degenerating in- fluence on the mind of the public and constitutes a grave reflection on the national dignity of China." The story was filmed in Peking last year by the Kanyang Kuo Hud Mo- tion Picture Company, a Chinese concern, by special permission of the local officials at that time.
