ALONE WITH RATS
AND MICE.
INQUEST ON A RECLUSE.
a
Mr. H. R. Oswald, the West Lon- doa Coroner, recently inquired at the Kensington Town Hall into the death of John Wilkins (70), who was found dead in the basement of twelve-roomed house in Ashburn Gardens, Kensington. He had lived alone in the house and was rarely seen by his neighbours, whem he sold that his only companions were two rats called Minnie" and Charlie."
Mr. Osward, opening the inquiry, enid that Wilkins was apparently a man of mean. He was found in the house with nothing but candle ends and ras in it. It looked at first rather a sinister case, for there were wounds in the head. He had been dead some time, but I think! the evidence will go to prove that it was not a criminal assault but an accidental death. The police broke into the house and in a front base ment room they found him lying on a heap of old clothing. There was! scarcely an article of furniture in the place-not a bed, a table, or a chair. The body was in a dirty condition."

It is also argued that a slightly larger hole would solve the stymie problem, which has been a bone of contention among golfers from time inmemorial, and that it would speed up the gamé and enable more people to play during the limited hours available for recreation.
Opponents of the change assert that golf is already too easy, and that if the hole is increased even by half an inch, the game will be ruined. So far, the advocates of change appear to have the best of the argument, but they have to reckon with a strong body of golfing die-hards" who will perish in the last bunker in defence of a bole which they regard as something |--- almost sacred.

LIBERAL M.P.'S BILL.
In the House of Commons recent- ly, Mr. Mander (L.-Wolverhamp ton) asked leave to bring in a ̧ Bíll. to amend the law relating to the prevention of corruption.
He said that the measure, which was supported by members in every quarter, of the House, consisted of one operative clause, and its object was to make easier the task of those who were trying to remove the curse of bribery from the commercial life of the country. There was no doubt that to-day, unfortunately, in many of our industries bribery was abso- lutely rampant. But at present be fore a prosecution for bribery could be instituted it was necessary to obtain the fat of the Attorney- General, which in fact involved a double trial, and sometimes great cost and delay.
