COURT MARTIAL ON WARRANT OFFICER.
PASSENGERS.
Arrivals,
The following passengers brrived yesterday by the R.M.S. Empress of Russia, from Vancouver and the North: For Hong Kong: Sir J. At a general Court-martial at and Lady Aird, Miss Aird, Mr. and Whittington Barracks. Lichfield, | Mrs. J. D. Bush, Master Bush, Mr. Lioward Claude Victor Hogan, F. W. D. Bannister, Dr. R. A. warrant officer and permanent staff
instructor of the 8th Battalion, The North Staffordshire Regiment, was found Guilty of striking a superior officer in the course of his duties at Burton-on-Trent Drill Hall and of absenting himself for four days without leave. Captain Percy Stodhart Laughton, Adjutant of the 8th Battalion, The North Staffordshire Regiment, said that when he told the secured that ap. plication had been made for him to report to the 2nd Battalion, he suddenly exclaimed, "I don't care what happens, I am fed up with the job, at the same time striking the witness twice in the face with his Asts causing him to bleed freely from the forehead and right car. Hogan told the Court that during a conversation with Captain Laugh- ton he asked him for two hours' his wife, who was leave to see dangerously ill. The captain jump, ed up and grasped a ruler off his deek with which to strike him, say ing. Don't bring your cripple wife's illness here! The accused did not wait for him to hit him, but struck the Adjutant two blows. As Captain Laughton again refused permission for him to see his wife. he went without permission. The nocused was given an exemplary character, and it was pointed out that he was within two hoaths of completing 21 years' service
Among the many notable apart. menta in London which are under- going their annual overhaul just now is the famous old Board Room at the Admirality, where during the war very momentous decisions were taken and there were, assembled at one time and another some of the most famous of our naval heads. This room romains in much the sama condition as it was in the days of Nelson, whose portrait adorns one wall and is directly faced by a similar painting of William IV. in his naval uniform. A very interesting feature that dates back to the days of Napoleon
