For once the Chinese gentry cast their traditional dignity and reserve into the air because their offspring must appear at their best.

The mystery of the man, the so- 'called Marquis de Champaubert, who was last month found to have been buried alive beside a forest path at Villennes, near Veranilics, has been cleared up as to its main features. An exconvict, named Henri Boulogne, has confessed that he and the dead man were acconi plices in this macabre affair. From his statement, it is clear that the "Marquis," who called himself Marcel Clément, and whose real name was Clément Passal, had ar- ranged for himself a mock funeral, which ended in an unexpected and tragic fashion. Boulogne has been detained on a charge of homicide,

Clément Passal, after a life of fraud, was engaged in negotiatione for the publication of his memoirs. Apparently the businees had not gone very favourably, A man of morbidly romantic imagination, he conceived the idea that the succes of his book would be the greater if he could associate himself in the public mind with comic striking and extravagant adventure. In conjunc. tion with Boulogne, a former pri- Bog companion, he elaborated a scheme for working up a succession of fantastic stories about his deten tion and torture by a secret society. The contest was held under the auspices of the Public Health, the Social Service, and the Educational Bureau of the Special Municipality of Nanking It was an epoch- making event inasmuch as it was the first time in the history oil China-a nation-with traditional regard for age alone that the im portance of babies and children in the social order was given official recognition. It was from the A class babies that the winners of the contest were to be chosen. Out of some 100 children who went through the preliminary examination, 141 qualified for this class. They were ngain divided into six age groups, from each of which five winners were selected by the judges in a final contest, according to their appearance, pasture and activeness. Of the 30 prize babies, 10 were girls nud 14 boys. With the exception of a 7-month old boy who won the first prize in the one-year- old group, the first prizewinners of the other five groups were all girls.

Examination of the weight and height of the children was based on the standard weight and height for Japanese children. The following chart shows how the weight of the prize babies compare with those of the Japanese standard babies:-
