FORCE.
TITLES TO BE CHANGED. THE NEW ORDINANCE. Important amendments to the existing Police Ordinance will be introduced for their first reading by the Attorney-General" (Sir Joseph Kemp, K.C.) at to-day's Legislative Council meeting.
Police titles are to be changed, the Captain Superintendent of
Polier becoming the Inspector General of Police, and a number of matters concerning bail and Arrest are being re-adjusted. The changes will come into effect on January 1, 1930.
The following summary of the proposed measure is taken from the current Gazette:-
The Ordinance to amend the Po- lice Force Ordinance, 1000, states that in the appropriate sections the words Captain Superinten- dent, the Deputy Superintendents, the Assistant Superintendents and the Probationers" are repealed and the following words substitut- ed therefore

is stated that the period of engage- ment may include a probationary period, and should the person thus engaged be found during his pro- bationary period to be unsatisfac tory, the Inspector General of Po lice may at any time during such probationary period terminate the engagement.
No person whose period of engagement is thus terminated shall be entitled to any pay or compensation other than the pay earned up to the time when the engagement was terminated.
Free Passages.
A clause is added to the Police Force Ordinance to the effect that:
It shall be lawful for the Gover nor, at his discretion, to grant to any European subordinate officer or constable a free passage to such Fort on the completion of a period of less than four and a half years resident service.
Inspector-General's Powers, Subject to certain provisions it shall be lawful for the Inspector General of Police to make such re- gulations as he may consider neces- sary for
(a) the general government and discipline of the force; (b) regulating the internal
economy of the force; and (c) carrying out the daily rou-
tinc of the force.
All regulations made under. this Eection shall be published by the Inspector General of Police in the form of Police General Orders and skall come into effect on the date of such publication, unless some other date be specified in any such order.

His Worship remarked that he did not think this was the worst type of ense and that he would impose a sentence of two months' imprisonment.
