CRICKET NOTES.
THE COMING SEASON.
Summer is passing. It is stili abominably hot, and all that sort of thing. But, if the weather be propitious, the nets will go up on Monday next. It has always seem. ed to me that it is a case of "Nets up Heat down."
Of course, our first fortnight it is pretty torrid and one is only exercising the muscles, clearing the eye, and trying to find a bit of a length. Anyone who tries, to become intensive in the first two weeks is not, an enthusiast but plain tool. Quiet exercise, taken in reason, is the thing, and then one rushes violently down a steef place into a shower, but plenty of towel,
massage after. But I suppose we all have our views on training. Anyway, the great fact remains that the nets are going up again and the summer is finishing! In fast, the only dark spot I know of on the picture is that on Friday morn inga-a Friday. mark you, in both senses, one starts reading those dull remarks of a fellow called 8. From the Straits is a very different adventure from the trip to Shang- It means over a month a ab sence, and that is not so easy now as it was in the old spacious days of yore. may use the phrase-in F.M.S. cricket. We here, and in Shaug. hal, fully recognise that we cannot expect to send our full strength up to Shanghai, or down to Hong Rong and it is no disgrace to be laten away, while a victory away is a crowning Inure. But the P.M.S. were still fuli of their splendid show against the Aur tralians. And a great number of Thai could not realize that a friendly invitation from H.K.C.C. 10 B.C.C. was a suggestion oba very friendly and pleasant, match. I have not gone into this from any spirit of controversy. I have en able to talk the whole business over either personally or by Jetter with a good, many of the best cricketers and sportemen down there. And I know they would say "Amen
to every word of mine, But I have mentioned the position as I think it is bound to have a bearing on this year's cricket. In view of the trouble after the 1927 debacle, utterly unjustified as it was, I fancy the Singapore Cricket Club will find it impossible to send a side up this year. I trust I am wrong. If I am right, it will not be the fault of the very good sports. men and good fellows whom we have had up here before. And it is to emphasize this that I have written what I have written.
cricket Ramsey can play but he will have to stange a come-back on last senson's form to get in. . C. Fincher is an citirely doubtful quan- tity. If his. 1929-20 form was true he won't get in. But personally I. think he was suffering from a League team with too many other bats.
E. F. Fincher, I suppose.. will get a trial but he will have to improve enormously to get in. At present he is quite unsound though at times brilliant.

Barring Anderson, the University have no serious candidates I think And in the end it might be better for his cricket if he did not get in. Craigengower and the Civit Service can, I think, offer arrious candidate. Kelly may be tried as a bowler but he will have to improve a lot to have any chance. W. C. Hung will be rather a strong candidate from the C.R.C. but I think they have no one else. The Indians have A. A. Rumjahn now. if he were to get down to business right away and practice, I should rather fancy his chances ns, besides hie batting, he is extraordinarily quick in the field and bowling on his wicket might easily put out one or two quite good bata. A. H. Madar should also be tried but I doubt if there is any other serious possibility.
