SUMMER EVENING

FROCKS.

Lane, Crawford's are now show. ing a pleasing collection of summer evening frocks, most of which are made of washing materials. They have been specially designed för wear in hot climates and while re- taining smartness of line they are. cut for coolness.

There is, for example,.a. dress of eer net cut on "picturesque lines with a long full skirt and tiny fichu The skirt has inset pointed panels of tucking, and the vandyked line round the hips is emphasised by means of bands of mauve and blue sewn to the pink silk under slip. The diagonal is stressed in a well cut frock of white washing brocade satin, while another white frock of ratio beauté is cut on almost Grecian lines with a slightly bloused body. Black silk net tucked on the diagonal is worn over an apricot satin slip, while a grace- ful line distinguishes a frock of ruby, georgette and silk lace. A very delightful dress is made of jade green chiffon with a quaint cape effect on the bodice. The line on which it is draped are up- doubtedly suggested by classical

statuary.

AN EARLY BIRD.

"A SALE AND A SCARLET HAT.

There are compensations for living in the East, not the least of them is that the summer sales come on right in the middle instead of at the end of the season. By the time the July sales open at Home thera is already a prospect of autumn days ahead, and, however, tempting the bargains, many women are forced to remember that in a short while, they will be needing winter clothes, But here we can and most of us do wear summer frocks and hata till nearly Christmas time, so to take an advantage of a sale is almut a duty,

That at the Doily Vardon Hat Shop is as popular as usual. There remains still quite a large collection of most attractive hata which only came in about a month ago, and. which are now still further re- duced, some of them to half price or less. There was a window of most delightful sealing wax red hats in the other day, which meant small tragedy for me. I passed at 1p.m, and saw one which much

coveted, as I hurried past to catch my ferry. Soon after 2 p.m. when I returned in search of it, it had been sold. That is the only thing I don't like about the Dolly Vardon sales, too many other people like them as much as I do and samc- times one of them gets in first

For casement windows the cur- tains should hang about four inches below the sill, and the usual treat ment is to have a small gathered heading, or you may have a plain heading and 11 small gathered valance. For medium sized windows

'THE TEMPLE BELLS ARE RINGING.”

HISTORIC SCREEN FOR LONDON.

A Japanese bronze temple, gong which measures about 18 inches across the top has just been sold by Messrs. Komor & Komor to a collector for a large sum.

The history of these temple gongs is an interesting one. When a new temple is built or there is a desire for a second gong, bands of begging priests are sent out to collect money. The priests wear on their heads a kind of basket-work helmet and visor with two eye holes. They carry begging bowls and as they go they play traditional airs on a Aweet toned fute to attract the attention of charitable per90728. Every coin which is dropped into the bowl is. when the begging touris over, melted down with the bronze of which the gong is cast and so incorporated with it, The more fine metal, gold, silver or platinum, is mixed with the göng the more musical is the note pro- duced when it is struck. When the gong is cast and set up in its ap- pointed place in the temple, it is solemnly sounded for the first time in honour of the donor, for whom long prayers are recited by the priests. "

How a Temple Gong is Struck.

These gongs are in the shape of large bowls or jardinières, and are struck not, on the body, but with anupward stroking" movement, neross the upper rim, a lovely rote being produced. Their gongs are mach valued by the priests and are only sold if the temple is des troyed, in order to defray the cost of a new building.

Over 200 Years Old,

The gong which has just been sold is over 200 years old and was valued possession of the Narino Temple near Nagasaki. When the temple was destroyed it was bought by Mr. Komer, senior. The stand was burnt with the temple, but the present stand, of red lacquered wpod, is an exact replica of the original. When struck the gong rings for exactly two minutes.
