Cape Town, July 2-South Africa Laginen called a land of surprises

but rarely has a greater one been sprung, upon a people used to

shocks than the admission this week hy a Minister of the Government that in order to deal with the tor mendous illicit traffic in diamonds found in Namaqualand, it had been decided to appoint busers of illicit stones and to protect them from prosecution in order that these stones might be bought back by the Government and the diamond mar ket prevented from clumping.

Some time ago. white men produced these priceless stones at a wage of 718d a day. The system of production like the traffic in stones has continued for many months. Time and time again diamonds which could have been found in no other place than Namaqualand have appeared among those offered for sale at Lichtenburg and other of the numerous alluvial diggings.

The mystery surrounding the ignition of petrol which was used for cleaning a dress by Miss Mary Savory, aged twenty-three, of Tor rington Park, North Finchley, who died from burns, was not solved at the inquest.

Misa Savary's father said that his daughter was in a boxroom, clean. ing a dress which she wore at the time. The flames from the petrol were extinguished by Mrs. Savory and a nurse with a quilt.
