useful.

Among the black shapes now lo be found in the Dolly Varden Hat Shop, are several cloche and pake bonrict-eloche shapes of braid straw crimmed with coloured stitchery or applications of printed silk. Very smart is a pilinsson cloche with lace trimmed crown, and a toque of fine glazed straw with an orange grebe mount.

CARE OF BOOKS.

As we emerge from the damp days we notice that book bindings look dull, and the edges ate covered with

a dirty film. Dusting alone is not effective; sterner measures are accessary before any booklover will be satisfied with their appearance.

Remove the books, then wash the shelves and the inside of the case with soapy water. The wood must thoroughly dry before volumes may be replaced.

The "days when carpets WETE either of the Turkish or "Per-be sian persuasion, or "bloomed with strange cabbage rose growths, which emanated I regret to say from Eag land, are, happily past, and now carpet manufacturers ATC going

more and more to the museums for their designs. Delicate Chinese brocades and embroideries have proved the inspiration for exquisite earpets," and priceless Persian silk rugs are faithfully reproduced.

Some of these designs you will find on the new rugs and carpets which have just been imported by Whiteaway, Laidlaw's. The colours are soft, grey, and violet blues pre-, dominating in the rugs, as a back! ground for cleverly designed panels where flowers bloom in their natural form and colour on white or pargh- · ment grounds. These rugs, which are fully large, are reversible and washable, and priced at about $25.

The carpets are very attractive too, and in n good range of designs. They are, all of a reliable English make and tensonable in price.
