SATURDAY'S RACE MEETING.

FIRST · EXTRA RESULTS.

BOXING EVE SMASHES ANOTHER RECORD.

[BY EARLY BIRD.]

As I predicted in my notes on Saturday the first Extra Race Meeting of the Hong Kong Joekry Club at Happy Valley was a brilliant success, the facing excellent and the finishes most excit- jag.

The Eve stable's beautiful candidate Boxing Eve further en- hanced his reputation by breaking the record for six furlongs in a field of seven of the very best of our spring contenders.

At the rock every one began to move but O'Moon con- tinued to crack up the pace and Snally ran in a winner under the judicious management of Wong, who cartainly gets full measure when- ever he is astride the iron grey, The Jamaica was fairly close up, con- sidering, with King's Falloch four lengths to the bad to fill third berth,

Wanchai Handicap "A" Class. From the point of view of an excellent finish this race provided one of the most exciting it has been my very good luck to witness for many" a day. The Eve connections had two of their best candidates out, with Mr. Pote-Hunt on minute and

Grand

City Hall (late Glorious Dahlia) who had established the pre- vious record was included in the list, but he did not help in any way in establishing the new record as Boxing Eve made his own running and won from flag fall to winning post in 29 seconds beating the previous record by 1-5 af a second.

BOXING EVE'S RECORD.

Boxing Eve who has taken part in 18 races since he first start- ed as a griffin in Hong Kong in 1998 has been placed 1st 10 ten times, 2nd twice, 3rd 3 times and has only been unplaced on one

occasion.

His total aggregate in prize money is $0,810, in addition to which he won the 1028 Aggregate Cup, St. Andrew's Cup' and 'the Chater Cup.

He holds the records for six furlongs and seven furlongs and ́although he covered the 1 mile and 165 distance in record time it stands as an unofficial," the 'race having been won at less weight for inches.

Amongst the owners principal honours went to the "Eve stable who accounted for two-frsts, in second and a third.

Mr. Ho Kom Tong was a close second with two firsts and one third.

Mr. T. L. Wang, despite the fact that two of Shanghai's "crack" jockeys were riding at the meeting, carried off the honours amongst the riders with three wins and one third,

THE RACING.

Happy Valley Handicap. Boxing Eve, who was selected by the public to carry the money, did not disappoint his supporters as be hopped out at flag fall and the timekeeper just managed to spot him as he flashed pant the post in the excellent time of 1.29 which is a record. This magnificent "baby" was so full of running that it took his excellent rider, Mr. Pote-Hunt, all his time to stop him from doing another round of the course! In paying a tribute to the pony and his rider I must not forget to men- tion Mr H H. H. Priestley whose capable handling of "Boxing Evej bears testimony to his knowledge of the business..

Throughout the whole of the extra seasons he kept his charge hard at work despite the freely express ed opinions of the knowing ones, who considered the big bay would be overgalloped before the meeting, Looking back over the betting for this race I cannot understand why Tarmacadam was better backed than Baker's Bay. The last named beat Tarmacadam in the "All Out Stakes at the big meeting carrying 163 lbs. On Saturday the Bay" pony was meeting his rival on much better terms than the last occasion on which they met and despite the fact that the only thing to Tarm cadam's credit is one win in n "B" Class Handicap in the slow time of 1.33.3-5 carrying 140 lbs.

First Extra Meeting Stakes. A slashing race from start to finish and one for which Mr. T. L. Wong must receive full credit. To those backers who like to see their fancy about twenty lengths in the lead this race must have been a nightmare, as Majestic Hall was lying a long way at the rear of the field till well into the straight when he was sent through with one of those brilliant rushes that Mr. Wong displays on occasion, and came home inside 204, to the delight of a host

Mr. Pote-Hunt held a decided advantage though as he was first jockey and knew what his own mount was capable of, in addition to knowing the capabilities of Dr. Reidy's mount. Pote-Hunt rode a beautiful roce, and, waiting for Young Pretender to fall back slip- ped into the possy and ran on
