PROSPECTS AND SELECTIONS FOR

"THE FIRST DAY.

SOME GOOD PONIES AND THEIR CHANCES.

LARGE FIELDS EXPECTED.

[BY EARLY BIRD.]

The Annual Meeting of the Hong Kong Jockey Club opens at Happy Valley to day, the first race commencing at noon.

Some 183 ponies have been entered for the meeting and I have every reason to believe that fields will be considerably larger than they have been in the past. Some of the griffins have a breedy look about them and the subscription griffins on the whole, are a fairly representative Job with a few outstanding members. Amongst the old ponies we have some of our best performers at previous An- nual Meetings.

-The Tracki

The track is in excellent con- dition. It appears to be on the fast side as recent clockings indicate and I, would not be surprised to see

some of our existing records lower ed particularly in the long distance events.

As usual we have a number of crack riders from the North. Mr. "Billy" Hill will be riding first string for the Dunbar stables and probably second for the Eve stable, Mr. Pote Hunt will be riding first for the Eve stable, Mr. Haimovitch has been secured for the Dynasty stable. Mr. Heard will be up on the John Peel and Messrs. Dyer and Beith ponies. Mr. Encarnacao will have Mr. Ho Kom Tong's string. Mr. Quincey will be riding first string for Mr. Chan and Rafeek and Mr. Hu will be looking after the interests of Messrs. Lec and Lau.

bas suddenly developed the unpleas- ant habit of refusing to go round the course. However, if the shape ly dun settles down after his engagements to-day I have no doubt he will Sgure prominently in to- morrow's big face-

·Tale (Harriman), (Charles) with a probable second string entry from Mr. Ho Kom Tong's stable and one from the Dunbar stable will make up the rest of the field-ore of the best we have had for some time

TO-DAY'S RACES.

As is usual with this event we

shall probably see a tremendous field.

Amongst the more experienced loent riders we will e Messrs. Jungle Book has a good chance Wong, Charles, Roza, Clark, Harri of annexing this event if he is sent atan, Roidy, Stanton, Proulx, Loo, to the post. Madcap should also and Bac' house. The novice class run well in the hands of T. L will include Messrs. McCartney, Wong and may be returned a Gordon, Shillington, Morgan, Ho winner. The Jamaica who is fairly Sai Man, Loe, La Rocha S. To shifty over a short distance may be Wong, Liang, Ip, Clarke, Botelho, started here and would be sure to Fontes, Rafeck, Newbiggin, Wolfe-run prominently. If the Ptarmigan "Murray, Sugden, Sherman and in is not reserved for another event all probability some officers of the he may start here and will bear Services. I am not sure whether watching. the veteran Harold Seth and Mr. Sewell intend to sport silk. It is rather a pity that two such "good riders are seen so seldom in the saddle.

Improvements.

Since the last meeting at the Valley the efforts of our hard work ing clerk of the course, Mr. Gordon The Mackie, have borne fruit. nullah which was a great source of worry to racegoers in 1928 has been covered and the course now sents a very pretty sight. members stands help in the scheme and beautifully bedecked with the flags and the colours of the owners they are certainly, good to look прод. 2

The Malden Stakes.:

Hiawatha will probably be sent out in this race and may have a chance of accounting for the big prize in the event of not being op posed by Adam. Grand Tattoo Eve may also be saddled here as he will

suited by the distance. One of the Dukes will also start, but pro riding any of the first mentioned line up I do not think we need ex. pect to see them in the first fight. Mr. Ho. Kom Tong may send two of his string in Imperial Hall and Majestic Hall, if so the first named may do the trick Glorious Stag and Boyal Flush may also sport Victoria Stakes.

started here, which I think is not likely. New Year's Eve would make things interesting if he was sent out here...

In the saddling paddock backers have been well provided with a new lean, over. Mafoos will for the future carry on their arm & corres ponding number to the saddle cloth number of the pony engaged in the race. This is a very welcome in- novation in case the ponies have to be rugged on account of adverse weather. Another improvement will be the blackboard which will be placed near the judges box to show the pari-mutuel results."

Valley Stakes.

The Pheasant has shown wonder. ful form and the Ape will be his biggest danger. Zephyr is sure to carry a lot of the right kind of sup- port owing to his convincing track displays. King's Tallock may also be a possible danger here.

Trial Plate.

2

We may see Adam and President Hall opposed in this long distance Covent in order to get an angle on

their form for the Derby. French- man's Bay may also start, likewise Blue Danube, Glorious Staror Peterkin.

*The Derby. Principal interest centres in the Derby candidates, the outstanding ponics of which, are Adam.

The Governor's Cup. Hiawatha, President Hall and Peterkin and if form is any This is a cinch for liat Bay'il criterion the winner should be started. If the stable send out found amongst this lot.

This is considered a very good performance and he finished with out any apparent effort. In the light of his previous track form he appeared better distance per former than a sprinter so it is all the more remarkable that he should show such pace at the finish of a practice sprint.

Grand Tattoo Eve may also be held over for this event. Royal Flush should be amongst the plac- ings if started and in case Bluchill Day is not started earlier he may run very well here."

Jockey Club Stakes. Sitting Bull is a cinch for this event if he is kept over although the stable may reverse the order and send Elliot Bay instead. New Year's Eve is a hundred per cent. improved pony and will make them run. Young Pretender may be held over for this event in which case the result will be rather interest- ing. Candidates who may spring a surprise aro Town Hall, Misty Eye, Pickle Peck,

Kalgan Plate,

This race is very open owing to the fact that most of the outstand- ing, ponies having been sent out in earlier events. Half Pint may have a chance as his form is on the right side at the moment. Pink Pearl will also be amongst the likely ones and should any of the Hynes and Mackie, Dyer and Beith, or Dynasty stable start the race should be a very interesting affair.
