FANLING HUNT STEEPLECHASES.

SASSOON CUP WON BY LIEUT. SHILLINGTON,

N. HASHIM'S MY LADY RUNS AWAY, WITH WINTER HANDICAP.

[BY EARLY BIRD.]

The New Year steeplechase meet-

of the Fanling Hant was brought to a very successful con- clusion in the presence of a large gathering at Kwanti race-course last Saturday afternoon. H.E. the Cecil Clementi, Governor (Sir

K.C.M.G.) and party were present

The winner paid the very good dividend of $8.00 which was remark,

able considering 130 tickets were registered for a win compared to E and 17. which were placed on the second and third horse respectively.

The Winter Handicap. Mr. N. Hashim's candidate My also H.E. the General Officer Com-Lady, won in a canter, in spite of manding Troops (Major-General Cthe fact that she was giving 18 lbs." C. Luard), the Colonial Secretary to the second pony and 16 lbs. to (the Hon. Mr. W. T. Southorn, the third. Tap Sise's endeavour to C.M.G.) and Mrs. Southorn.

Quite" a number of those present had taken advantage of the glorious weather, and, well supplied with picnic baskets, enjoyed a picnic tiffin ir. beautiful surroundings among the

hills between and the racecourge.

As I predicted in my notes on Saturday morning it turned out to

be a favourites' day and I ata, cer- tain backers must have enjoyed very entertaining afternoon's sport.

Out of the five races, I succeeded in tipping four winners; the other one went astray somewhat and only succeeded in being placed third though I have to admit that I had

him spotted as about the best thing of the meeting. Still, this is where the glorious uncertainty of the game comes in, and reminds us even the best of good things are apt to go wrong at times.

The feature of the meeting was the sterling performance of Lieut. J. G. Shillington who although auf- fering accutely from an accident! which occurred early in the week successfully piloted two winners, one of his mounts, Ace of Spades, hav. ing to be ridden half the distance with the aid of only one stirrup..

THE RACING.

was

"

stretch the mare ended disastrously as he ran wide" at "Loo's Lap which caused Pekin to run wide also which left. Little River to lead the way till entering "Hell's Gully" when My Lady was moved forward and was at the head of affairs when the field came in sight. Borderer parted from his rider at the open ditch owing to a broken stirrup leather. And Mr. Stanton had a se call on Lock Rannock who nearly came to grief at the same jump. Little River who was jump. ing confidently under the judicious handling of Lieutenant Morgan of the.." Queen's "lacked the neces- sary pace in the run home and was content to collect second money

Mr. Fiddles Wilson the starter sent them off to an even start and from the early beginning it was seen that Durham was a red hat triar, Geoff Shillington who is an Ace at this form of steeplechasing had his pony beautifully balanced and clearing his obstacles like a deer he galloped on well ahead of the rest of the field. At the winning post the first time round, Solitaire almost drew level and "Lon Reidy on the favourite was doing nicely about three lengths behind. Not much change occurred in the back country and no forward move- ment was made till opposite the river bend when the leaders began to draw away from the rest of the field when Solitaire, finding the pace too warm, shot his bolt and fell back to meet Skipper who "although a long way behind, was covering the ground strongly in an effort to get on terms with the leaders. Two jumps from the home turn. Reidy began to move on the favourite, but without response, as Durham main tained the lead without difficulty and catering the straight first ran on to win by about three lengths from skipper who succeeded in pipping Aristophanes on the post for third place. Caviare, Solitaire and Craigavad were not suited for the distance and pace tailed off and they finished in the order named.

New Year Maidens.

which left Siang Riger and Lock Rannock to provide the onlookers with a little excitement in order to give the public a chance of collect ing third place bets. Lock Ran- nock got the verdict by a small margin, which may have the effect of causing the old stager to wonder how his master, breaks even on his stable upkeep.

Grand Military Cup.

The beautiful big Silver Cup which was given by Sir Victor Sassoon brought a ready response from the Services with the result that a fairly representative field faced the started in this event. Ace

of Spades who has a remarkable big following was the tit bit as far as the betting was concerned and justi. fed his supporters confidence by winning as he liked despite the in- convenience which must have been caused owing to the loss his rider sustained during the race. puzzles me is why 'Grey Eyes' was favoured in preference to James Pigg who is a most consistant per former over distances.
