CRICKET NOTES.
THE "ASHES" RETAINED.
Englishmen all the, world over will have heard with delight of the victory of Chapman's team in the third Test Match. By winning the first three matches off the reel, the

Most but perhaps not all of my readers will recollect that the phroso refers to the "Ashes of English cricket and a rather bitter or pessimistic jest made at the time when the Australian eleven Arst defnitely had the better of England. At the beginning of the last day's play in the recent game, the result must have seemed a for Fone conclusion. But when Hen dren. SOME INTERESTING, DOUBLES

Judging by the present activity of the various clubs, and players generally, unusual interest is being Championships organised by the taken in the forthcoming Open Hong Kong Cricket Club. Recently
United Services Recreation Club by strong Chinese team beat the a narrow margin, each being repre sented by three doubles pairs who played the best of three sets. Two more matches of the lame kind have been arranged for this month, the Kowloon Cricket Club meeting the United Services Re creation Club on the 20th at t former's courts, and the Chinese Recreation Club meeting the U.S.R,C. also on the 27th on their own courts.,,

The winning of the rubber will in some way rob the remaining
matches of some of their interest
I do not think, however, that the English team will slack off in an way, or be altered very largely. We still require two victories to make our total of wins equal to that of Australia. And besides, so much has been said by the critics at home i of the decadence of English cricket as compared with the game in Aus- tralia that Chapman and his men will probably go all out to prove the critics wrong.
The League. Turning to the usual weekly review of the Senior Division, things started moving last Satur- day. The K.C.C. had considerably the worst of the game against University and on their own ground
too!
That their bowling would be weak was evident early in the! senson, but one hardly realized how weak it would become, especially when Goodwin has a bad patch as at present. I confess I na surprized E. F. Fincher does not go on a bit earlier though his length is rather uncertain In fact, if it were not for the batting of Brace, Bamaas. and E. F.Fincher, the K.C.C would be in a bad way. E.. C. Fincher seems dead out of form this: season, but it is to be hoped he will recover later. I don't think he has ever played quite such good cricket for Kowloon as he did for the 0.8.0.0.
