In sentencing the prisoner, the Magistrate said that the sentence would commence from the day be was first charged-August 8th, 1929 which meant that the defendant had only about one month further to serve. You are a very violent and turbulent person," said the Magistrate, and you are extremely lucky not to be charged with murder and hanged. The complainant has been in grave danger of his life."
The Case.
In answer to the charge, the do- fendant pleaded not guilty, and said that he had only struck back in self defence.
The defendant in his statement
from the dock, said that he was en- titled to three meals a day, whereas the complainant, his master, had only given him two meals. On the and complained that he had been day in question he was very hungry given too much work to do, and was weak. His master had insulted him, telling him to go and refusing to give him his wages. The com plainant got a bamboo pole and prodded him in the chest, at which the defendant became angry and sizing the pole be retaliated.
Brushing nside this unlikely story the Magistrate sentenced the de- fendant to six months' hard labour with the remarks stated above.
