· TERRITORIES.
SIR ROBERT HO TUNG AND HIS EXCELLENCY'S INSPIRING APPEALS,
INTERESTING EXHIBITS OF LOCAL
PRODUCTS.
There seems every prospect of the New Territories Agricul- tural Show growing year by year until it becomes an event of very first rate importance. It is the object both of the British Govern ment and, of several enterprising fums and individuals to make the New Territories an agricultural model for China—a place of experi- ment and a pioneer in a Chinese Agricultural Revolution enabling the Chinese farmer to progress as his European brother has done steadily since the 18th century when the growing of roots, scien- tific stock breeding and beet sugar refining wrought so great & change in the Western countryside.
New Territory Agriculture owes an immense debt to Sir Robert and Lady Ho Tung who were, with the energetic Chairman of the Show Committee (the Rev. B. R. Wells) and the English Hon Secretary (Mr. J. D. Bush, very much to the fore on Saturday when the Show was opened.
It was held at Sheung Shui in a field opposite their New Ter ritory residence lent by Sir Robert and Lady Ho Tung.
A big pavilion was erected, the centre being decorated, with an elaborate Chinese design, and the centre space was devoted to a platform from which the ceremonial speeches were delivered.
The Show was declared open by H.E. the Officer Administering the Government who was accompanied by Mrs. Southorn. Excellency was met by Sir Robert and Lady Ho Tung and other members of the Committee, and then introduced to a number of New Territory village elders. A group photograph was then taken and the opening ceremony took place..
RUGGED CHINESE FARMERS.
His
During his speech Sir Robert Ho Tung spoke of the " rugged Chinese farmers and there could have been no better description of the group of men, in their black cloth ceremonial robes, who had assembled to co-operate with great Chinese magnates like Sir Robert and British administrators in advancing the development of their country.
In his reply His Excellency emphasised the great interest taken by the Government in New Territories agriculture and in these shows which are meant to inspire in the farmers a spirit of friendly rivalry and a desire to improve their agricultural Methods.” About a thousand people attended the Show, mainly Chinese, but quite a large number of European agricultural enthusiasts. were present..
The band of the 15th Punjabis was present and rendered a num- ber of selections during the afternoon.
The crowd, and the heavy motor, traffic were admirably handled by the Police, the "regulars" being reinforced by eight Chinese Police Reservists under Mr. F. Mow Fung,
His Excellency made a careful inspection of all sections of the Show and subsequently was entertained to tea by Sir Robert and Lady Ho Tang, among the guests being the Hon. Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Creasy, the Hon. Mr. and Mrs. E. D. C. Wolfe, Mr. and Mrs. Fraser, the Rev. H. R. Wells, Mr. J. D. Bush, Mr. Eng Lung Hsieh, a representative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Peping, Mr. Fung Ki Chenk, and Mr. Tang Wei Tong.
The Show was continued yesterday when large crowds again paid a visit, making the journey by rail, bus and car.

The points as regards uniformity of shape and size and cleanliness had been fairly well observed, and no doubt those who were not success- ful this year will have" picked up some useful kinta for the nêxt event of its kind.
The Duro Company sent some examples of motor driven water sys- tems but the "general exhibits were disappointing.
