FILM OPERAS TO BE

*`SHOWN.

}

As the result of the recent intro- "talking" pictures, duetion of Producers have experienced great difficulty in distributing abroad ordinary talking" films in which the dialogue is in English. That this difficulty is recognized can be judged by the fact that a well- known British film company has made arrangements for the produc- tion of a series of full-length 'opera, sound films in which the music is intended to be more important than the language. The four operas so far slected are:-La Bohème, Faust, The Bohemian Girl, and Martha. The leading female part is, all four will be played by Miss Barbara Austen, who recently returned from Amerion, where she has been tour- ing as the prima donna of the National Opera Company and the Chicago Civic Opera Company. The series, on which production will start this month, is to be made part- ly in England and partly in Germany

THE WOMAN'S CORNER.

THE NEW MILLINERY.

ONE SIDED EFFECTS.

One of the problems the milliners seem to have set themselves this season is how to get the one-sided effect in miliaery.

Cutting the brim wider at one side (usually the right) than at the other was obvious. What next?

At one dress parade this point was specially watched for. The hats showed:-

A feather mount laid partly against the crown, then along the brim, then partly off the brim where it was widest-which was aver the right car.

Two quills stuck through the erown at the right side and slant- ing on to the brim,

A cerise velvet hat with an inch- and-a-half band of velvet, closely machine-stitched, forming the brim. The two ends of this band crossed lightly and stuck out above the right ear.

Berets were pulled over one ear, and if of velvet or panne bad a feather mount or a big feather bow accentuating the "pull over. The more tight-fitting of the berets those with little suggestion of the tam o' shanter about them-- sometimes have a band of shaved lamb, or even of breast-plumage feathers, going round the bend like a bandeau The only trimming then on the hat is a lovely, or an un- usual, ornament of the brooch or dagger variety.

TIPSYRICE.

Wash well a quarter of a pound of rice; then boil it; then dry it. Boil up half-a-pint of white wine with three tablespoonfuls of soft sugar and the same amount of lemon juice. Put the rice into this' gently and slowly, and then, boil again, so that in the end the grains are quite soft, but not mushy. At the close, a little more wine. Then strain the rice in a hot colander, tip it into a dish, and eat with what of jam, marmalade or stewed fruit appeals to your palate. The rice is equally good cold,

EXTRAVAGANCE!

CLEANING WITH BEER.

[UY MARGARET BULLEN:}

It seems that a hundred years ago beer was no more accounted of than silver in the days of King Solomon. It had its place on the. table, it is true; but it was also considered necessary in house-clean- ing.

When the housekeepers of those glorious old times wished to give a glose to oak-wainscot they washed it with warm beer. Then they boil- ed two quarts of beer with a lump of beeswax and a spoonful of sugar, and brushed it on to the wood be fore they polished it. A thirsty man might well look on at such operations with envy, unless he, too, had free access to the cellar.

They also used it mixed with pipeclay and blue to clean stone stairs and pasanges. "Many old- fashioned houses contained long, kitchen passages, all fagged with stone, to say nothing to scullerics and steps: Just think of the amount of good liquor that would be used for that purpose. alone!

A Grate CleanGT,

And they didn't stop there in their extravagant habita. They boiled it with blacklead and soap, and cleaned their grates with it, de- claring that nothing else could give such a beautiful shine; and when they wanted strong paste for stick- ing paper they mixed it with flour and resin instead of using water.

I have heard that men were also reckless in their ways with it. When photography was first discovered the negatives were developed in beer. Of course, this may be only a tale. If a man retires to a dark

room with a large beer jug who can tell whether he will develop plates or put the liquor to a nobler use"

Valuad Recipe.

It sounds a sticky, mess, but I believe it was a much-valued re- cipt, so there must have been some virtue in it. I wonder if there can be any connection between this and the old saying about "licking his
