HONG KONG TRADE IN
COPPER.
Copper wire, rods and plates are imported into the Colony from Japan, Britain, Belgium and Ger- many in large quantities and tran- shipped into South China. Japan- ese supplies are generally quoted at lower prices than European goods, but the quality of the latter is admittedly superior and the difference is so great that it is difficult to find buyers, for the Japanese copper, and boycott has made the Japanese trade much smaller than before. At present practically no business is done with Japan in this Hine...
of
Interviewed by a Daily Press IS- presentative a copper, merchant, said that the past year had been a satisfactory one for local copper merchants. This class of trade is cow in the hands of Chinese mer charts and it has shown an im- provement during 1928. Fair pro- Ets have been made, some merchants attributing this to the fact that prices have shown a decided increase daring the year. The stocks copper-plates, wire and rode- now in the Colony, are more then sufficient to meet the local demand. According to the Canton Gazette, considerable de copper is still mand in Canton. Japanese coppor are not accepted for the interior and the European supplies are not arriving fast enough to meet the demand. Prices in Canton, have inerased from 68 to 74 dollars a picul and are expected to adranes farther unless fresh supplies are soon received from the Colony."

an adjustment of panic-stricken 1923-1934" banks to a great extent. It goes 1824-1925 without saying that the depreciation 1925-1926 1926-1927 of bank-rates went a long way to wards the adjustment of financial 1927-1927 conditions.
In various industries, the general situation as regards the balance be tween demand and supply has been nearly controlled, owing to the re- trenchment measures taken in the operation factories. Consequently, the measures proved very effective in diminishing the burden of the bank-rates, decreasing cost of pro- duction, and general increase of efficiency.
