ROMAN CORN MILL.

IMPORTANT FIND IN

LONDON.

RELIC OF THE FIRST CENTURY.

Another important relic of Roman London has been found in the City It is a complete corn mill, which discovered during the ex. cavation now' being made' on the site of the new Midland Back build ing in Princes-etreat.

WA

Although the pedestal on which the mill should stand has not been found, all the essential parts are unharmed, and the mill could be used to-day.

It is about 9 feet 8 inches in height, and is in the form of two hollow, truncated cones joined at their parrow ends and standing vertically. A circular lid of hard stone fits into the upper cone, and It is believed that corn would have been poured the lid and ground by rotating it by means of a shaft passed through holes,

Mr. Laurence Gotch, the architect in charge of the building opera tions, told me that the mill was found about 25 feet below ground lovel in a layer of debris resting on the bed of blue clay.

Ouly one other Roman corn mill is believed to have been found in this country. It is now in the British Museum, but it is not so well preserved.

The mill found in Princes-street is of the same type as those found in the bakers' shops in Pompeii," I was told by Mr. J. L. Douthwaite, the Curator of the Guildhall Museum. "It is difficult to judge its date from the depth at which it was found. since it lay on the old bed of the Walbrook, and its weight. would necessarily have caused it to sink far into the mud. It is pro- bable, however, that it was in the first century"

The discovery was made by Mr. E. B. Birley, of the Society pi British Antiquaries, who has been watching the excavations on behalf of his society and the Library Com- mittee of the City Corporation.

Mr. Reginald McKenna, Chair- man of the Midland Bank, has made a gift of the mill to the Guildhall Museum.

Regarding the report that he is to marry another girl in the near future, Mr. Galdos neither affirmed nor denied it, saying that he could not foretell what he might do in the future.

THE WOMAN'S CORNER.

WHY ACTRESSES REMAIN

YOUNG.

Actresses are usually ten years younger for their age than women in any other profession-younger even, despite their always rather hectic lives, than women of leisure.

The actress learns to walk, move and gesticulate from the first moment she takes up a stage career. She sits well, she lounges grace. fally, she holds her head high,, she kcows the value of a single gesture She carries her body well with the weight properly distributed. She has, in effect, poise, and poise car- ries her into old age almost im- perceptibly.

As a rule, too, the middle-aged actress who looks so much younger than she really is has mental poise as well incredible as this may sound. It is, however, a stage at- tribute also.

Gaining" A Gallant Outlook On Life, Quickness of perception, great adaptability, the habit of looking at life from many angles-all the possible angles invented, imagined or made concrete by the playwright

these are hers. No one can re main in a profession so full of un- certainty, disappointment.. heart- breaking failures, constant endea

Your

Montal polee can be acquired in an easier school. Once realise its value and it can be yours with a little practice. Looking facts in the face and making the best of things is a rough and ready recipe.

A character in a recent play ex-" claimed "I know that life is full of bitterness and disappointment, but I think it is gallant to be gay about it!" That is the foundation of mental poise.

Physical pois is still easier. Any middle-aged woman can correct ber worst faults herself if she will live intimately with a long mirror- not only so that she may practise holding her head in such a way that she does not accentuate ber double chin, walking well, sitting well, consciously, but also that she. may have opportunities of catching eight of herself when she is being natural and realising just how much perfection of poise the Jacks. Steam enough potatoes in their skins; then peel and slice them, fairly thickly. While they are get- ting ready melt three onces of butter in a pan with half a chopped onion for about three minutes; then add four tablespoonfuls of tomato purée, salt and a little grey pepper. While they are still warm, put the potato slices in a fireproof dish, and pour the tomato over. Cover with bread- crumbs, shavings of butter, and, aa your fancy is, also with grated cheese. A variant on this is, doing the potatoes the same way; mix some thickened brown stock, which you have touched up with Wor- 'cester sauce, with quite a good quantity of cold minced lean of bacon or ham, which pour over the slices. Sprinkle with grated parme. 'san and bake.

CHILDREN AS MOTORISTS.

Only one of my three children is at all tincomfortable when travel- ling by car and has to go with the dog by train," a well-known motor- ing expert said. "When my two other children were three and four I took them to Devon, I did not drive slowly, because shouts of re- monstrance greeted me every time I tried to. I drove fast and they were delighted. Their eyes were not affected, and at the end of the journey they were healthily tired and just as healthily hungry. On the other hand the travellers by train were neither hungry nor were they sleepy. They had slept in the train,

"Provided they are not the type of children who cannot sit still, and whose chief delight is to probe into the intricate details of the car and to endeavour to drive it as soon as your back is turned, children are good passengers by car. They have less to say than grown-ups and are" given to admiring your driving ecstatically, which is denied you when your wife is by your side,

Biz-Year-Old's European Trip.

A friend of mine has a little girl who travelled over Europe in Dcar, sleeping in it at nights, when ale was only six years ald Sha was allowed to do the map-reading, which afforded her immense enjoy: meat and increased her geographical knowledge, so that she informed the class at school where she went the rivers she saw and the strange people consorted with." This goes to prove that children bave reten- tive memories.

During this tour her eye became. trained in an amazing degree. Her health was perfect, and her interest never fagged,

"I think that & child, provided she feels well and strong, need not be prevented from going on a fairly long motor tour. If, however, "he or she feels ill when travelling this way, then it is best, to wait until this feeling wears off. Puppies often suffer from car sickness. bat outgrow it after a time.

A long journey with no breaks is very tiring for grown-up and for child. The little ones especially should be able to stretch their legs and given an opportunity of walk- ing about a little which lessens the feeling of compression that they get from sitting too long in one posi- tion.

To much to eat is not a good thing on a journey, but a fruitarian meal can do no harm."
