THE FIRST OF THE JANUARY SALES.

WHEN BUYING - A · HAT BECOMES A DUTY,

No sooner BTO the New Year festivities over than fresh pleasures are awaiting us, among which, if we are truly feminine, the January sales take high rank-

Of all sales perhaps a hat sale is the most exciting.

So I am not going to tantalise you with a picture of any of the hats which answered the roll call when the sale opened yesterday Every woman, or nearly every for you are more likely to see them woman, has a weakness for hats in the street than in the shop. SOMETHING VERY LOVELY.

"TWO FROCKS FROM

PETIT LOUVRE.”

AU

Although the winter season is till in full swing, the first frocks designed for the races are arriving. in the Colony. They combine, us they must when our race season comes comparatively early in the year, the exquisite daintiness which one associates with Ascot and Auteuille with a hint of the tailor made cost dress,

For example, I saw this week an afternoon frock, which would, of course, be very attractive for other functions than a race meeting, of mosa green crêpe de chine. It is made rather on the lines of a jumper and skirt worn with a loose fitting Bolero coat. The pleated skirt and the coat, which is scallop ed down the open fronts and round the bottom, are of green, as is the "hip yoke of the blouse. The blouse itself has a turn over collar edged with a narrow frill, the same frill running down the centre front, and is of maize coloured crêpe de chine. Interesting Cat.

An exquisite evening frock in pale pink georgette also claimed my. special attention. It is very aimply cut with a long uneven length skirt dipping at the sides. The desting tive features are the pointed hig yake which is set in like a medieval girdle and a little yoke rather like an eton collar at the neck. Be- tween the points of the "collar " ia embroidered a small panel of pearls and silver beads, while a barrow belt with a pink jewelled buckle clasps the hips.

Many more attractive gowns for the races and hats to be worn with them, are expected shortly,

shade.

There are too, included in the sale, a number of knitted woollen. suits and jersey cloth dresses, also in few charming evening frocks, and it should not be forgotten that the Dolly Vardon Ent Shop is the home. of these useful and attractive Daity de Luxe bags. In fact that sale is ene of the good things which we vished our women friends when we greeted them on Tuesday with "A Happy New Year."

A COSY SUIT.

An attractive vermon if the jumpar nuit. It is designed for a fine face, cluth in bottle green, with a lighter green stripe and n tän feather belt.

'FIFE O'CLOCK."

AFTERNOON FROCKS FROM "EVE."

"Fife o'clock" as our sisters of Paris call it. is above all the woman's hour, the hour when we meet and talk over, servanta and children and last but by no means least, husbands." It has often been said that women" do not dress, as they generally protest, to pleass men, but to excite the envy of their fellow wamen. However, that may be, it is certain, that every woman likes to look well when she goes. formally or informally, to tea with her friends of her owa'sca, Most of us are so constituted this we don't like going very often in the. Bame frock, which is doubtless wrong and extravagant but from a woman's point of view very reason- Table !

"Eve," of course, understands women who could from her very name understand them better? So if you visit the little shop that is to be found on the first floor of China Building, opposite the Hong Kong Hotel, you will find a number of charming little afternoon frocks at so low a coct that you will not only get one with a clear conscience bat feel quite virtuous in the process.

They all come from good London or Pariz houses and some of them are made of the artificial silk which. has become so popular at Home. The popularity of rayon" will probable spread even here in the land, of silk because it is less affect- ed by the climate than the genuine article

There is, for example, a dress of elephant grey rayon which is simply trimmed with pin tucks set in squares Red silk has been used for A dress with a cost and skirt effect. which opens over a beige vest. The neck and waist line are trimmed with broderie anglais in gold thread.
