ARMY IN FINAL FOR LAI WAH CUP.

JUNIOR LEAGUE RESULTS AS EXPECTED.

R.A.F. WIN THEIR FIRST MATCH. :

The Navy, and the Army gave a good display of Football, but the Army were always on top, the issue never being in doubt. The Army team is the best ever seen in Hong Kong and it will be a puzzle to know bow to fit in the talent coming to the Colony this trooping season.

Sinus the Army and England amateur centre ball, will be the only one to bid us farewell in the very near future. The junior. mäktes came off much as expected with the exception of Kowloon who appear to be a very poor side this reason. Three teams retain their unbeaten record and the Chinese Athletic still bead the table. Three tears winning at Home and two away..

The Army are to be congratulated on having got together a team of all round excellener, and their play in the Lai Wah Cup on Saturday was'n revelation to the spectators. Skiggs was an cutstanding figure at this stage, and kept the Naval left wing in complete subjection. Leach was in great ferm at centre forward, and led Cope & merry dance. He open ed out the game in most capable style, and both wings were con- tinnally being supplied with ground passes which they were able to take in their stride. Un to the interval however the Naval defence held out, Ward giving a fine display in goal.

Half-time: Navy 0, Army 0. A mistake by Fletcher nearly led to the downfall of the Army goal, lat Firth shot wildly. At the other end Larkin drew Ward out of goal and gave to Lench, whose shot was handled by Cornwall. A penalty was awarded and Caldicott opened drive which Ward the score with

V.R.C. ANNUAL AQUATIC SPORTS.

PRESENTATION" OF PRIZES.

FUTURE OF THE HARBOUR RACE.

The presentation of prizes to the winners of the Annual Aquatic Sports, including the Harbour Racts, was made on Saturday night at the Victoria Recreation Club.

Before presenting the prizes, Mr. W. Logan commented on the Cham- prenship races, in which four re- eords were made. The standard of swimming throughout had been high, with very good times..

D. Lyon To Go, But “Jim "* Johnstone To Stay.

the

Mr. Logan expressed his thanks on bebat of the V.R.C. to donors of the prizes, and to the Committee, whom he said had. worked very hard in arranging the

races.

Mr. Logan expressed his regret that the Chub would lose D. Lyon who was going Home" next year, bat the return of "Jimmy Joha- stone to the Colony would stan late interest in swimming events.

The Origin Of The Harbour Race.

At the conclusion of the presenta. tion of the prizes Mr. C. J. Cooke, the Hon. Secretary of the Victoria the Recreation Club, apoke of Auuual Harbour Races,

During the past few years the Annur Harbour Races bald by the V.R.C. bad not received the sup- port and enthusiasm which they deserved. Other Harbour races had been instituted by both the Chinese and the Military. These races tend to deprive the annual event arranged by the V.R.C of its position as the Harbour Race The origin of the Harbour Races owed its existence to an Editor of the China Mail who organized the event alter the great typhoon in 1906 when quite a number of lives were lost The Rice was to pro- mote swimming in rough water."

4

Since that date the Annual Har bour Race has been, organised by" the V.R.C., and with the exception of the War years, has been held annually. The Chinese have since organised an event of their own; the Military have 1.30 broken away, while a number of open Champion- ship races have been instituted by the Chinese themselves.

The V.R.C. holds the Mok Chal- leage Cap for the 320 yards Breast Last Stroke race for Chinese. year only one entry was received, and one post entry. The Hal Mile event set aside for Chinese has also been a failure. The committee was considering a conference with the officials of the Chinese Bathing Clubs with the idea of handing over these two Cups to the Chinese to run the races for them on con- ditions which would later, be ar the Harbour ranged Instead of Swin, the Chinese, and Mitary should call their races. the "Chi- Military

Mile." The Harbour Race should be reserved for the V.R.C. its founders. It was also the hope of Mr. Cooke to hold one race for all. Ladies, Military men, and Chinese could all compete in the same event, with, of course, separate prizes for each. In this way, the Harbour Race would retain its im portance and be the one Harbour Swim.

To Coach The " Younger Blood."

It is understood that "Jimmy Johnatone will be in Hong Kong
