FAMOUS RACING PEER.

THE KING'S FRIEND..

The Earl of Durham, the famous racing peer, formáty years (d senior steward of the Rockey Club and an intimate friend of the King, died last month at Harraton House, Exning, near Newmarket, in his seventy-fourth year.

Three of his brother-Brigadier- General the Hou. Charles Lambton, the Hon. George Lambion, and the Hon. D'Arcy Lambton=were with the earl when he died,

Lord Durham had no family, and

the heir to the earldom is his twin ton, whose elder son, Captain John brother, the Hon. Frederick Lamb

Frederick Lambton, will now be known as Viscount Lambton.

Another brother of Lord Durham is Admiral of the Fleet Sir Hed- worth Meux, who assumed the name of Meux in 1011.

Imperial Airways' Fine Record. The record of Imperial Airways during the three years, 1925 to 1827 (approximately 9,400,000 miles flown and 54,000 passengers carried without serious accident) must be attributed, it is stated, to the care ful medical selection and periodic re-examination of pilots of civilian passenger-carrying aircraft, the ex- aminations being carried out by the Central Medical Board.

"As the successful pilots of the past have set the standard of the present, so the successful pilots of the present will dictate the stan dards of fitness of the future pilots. Such a policy makes increasingly for safety in the air since, if any, special bodily condition" be found associated with lack of success in flying, that condition is noted and the regulations modified according 13."

WIFE OF BRITISH POLICE

A fortune of nearly £750,000 will be inherited by Lady Byng-wife of Lord Byng of Vimy, who is to sue ceed Sir William Horwood as Chief

Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police under the will of her uncle Mr. "Pandeli Ralli, who died at Brighton last month.

Mr. Ralli, a wealthy Greek mer chant, would undoubtedly have left more than a million pounds but for

Turf Reformer.

The earl's efforts for Turf reform were a striking feature of his long association with racing, and his speech at the Gimerack Club din ner in 1887 created a great sensa tion. It led to a libel action being brought against him by Sir George Chetwynd, who claimed £20,000 damages, and was eventually awarded one farthing:

The action, which related to racing transactions, was referred to a tribunal consisting of Prince Soltykoff, the Earl of March, and Mr. James Lowther, M.P-all eince dead.

Kind Edward.

King Edward was a personal friend of Mr. Halli, and was often entertained by him at his house in Belgrave-square. He was a român- tic and fascinating figure, and counted eminent men in every walk of life among his friends. It was from his house that Lord Kitchener went to his ill-fated voyage in, the cruiser. Hampshire.

He was blind for the last five years of his life, but the affliction did not mar bis high spirits, his generous nature, or his conversa tional powers. He was a member of Parliament from 1875 to 1885.

Lady Byng's father was a brother of the Earl of Ducie, and was for twenty-five years Marshal of the Ceremonies. Her mother, who now lives in Chester-terrace, Regent's Park, was a great friend of the late Duchess of Albany,
