CHINA TRADE PROSPECTS.
ENCOURAGING OUTLOOK.
Trade conditions in China general ly are still unsettled, but there are indications to be observed showing gradual improvement. Crop pros pects in the North; especially Man churia, are very good, although the. financial stringency is retarding business to some extent. However, railway rolling stock is now moving fairly freely, and Sino-Japanese relations are certainly not so strain ed as they have been for many months past, which is a factor react- ing very closely upon trade.
TRADE WITH THE PHILIP.. PINES.
HEMP AND COPRA STEADY:"
The Philippine hemp and copra markets remain steady, with good produccion. Californian shipments of fresh fruits to the Islands have notably increased, though refrige rator space is reported to be short.
The annual report of the Bureau of Customs of the Philippines for the
1027 show. year
exports valued at $155,600,000 and imports a 8115,900,000, an increase $18,700,000 in exports and de- crease of 83,400,000 in imports, the Intter being accounted for by diminished rice imports owing to the bumper home crop.

Exports included sugar to the value of $80,000,000, abaca 230,000,000, eceda-nut oil $25,000,000, copra $20,000,000 and tobacco 89,000,000, while imports included textiles to the value of $30,000,000, food stuffs 24,000,000, iren and steel $15,000,000, petroleum 88,000,000, and automobiles 24,000,000. Three fourths of the exports from the Islands went to the United States.

the so-called sharks'
The trade in birds' nests 'bas also suffered, the Chinese having turned to Turkey. Persia, Egypt, India and the Straits for supplies.
To give an idea of the magnitude of the trade in sea-products in Chias, we give the figures for last year, viz., héche-de-mer 8850,000; compos 81,750,000; cuttle-fish $4,000,000; salted herrings 8820,000; salted Ash not otherwise recorded $3,450,000 mussels, oysters and clams 8140,000; prawns and shrimps $310,000; seaweed and agar-agar $3,000,000; sharks' fins 1815,000; fishery products not otherwise re corded $2,250,000.
In normal times, Japan supplies all these lines to the extent of so per cent. of the total import into China, but, this year it is considered very doubtful whether Japanese shipments to China represent 30 per cent. of the total import.

MANCHURIAN BEANS.
SHORTAGE OF GUNNIES.
The crops in North Manchuria have shown excellent prospects s0 far, according to private advices from Harbin, and the Chinese Eastern Railway is making elaborate arrangements for the prompt hand- ing of freights at Vladivostock. Last year, owing to the carelessness of the Vladivostock port adminis tration in not making proper ar- rangements beforehand to cope with the movement of beans from North Manchuria to that port for tranship. ment to Europe, shipments were
seriously, delayed, and quite un- necessarily. Goods were piled "up in the open, at the mercy of the elements, and as a result shippers lost a good deal of money through the sweating" of the beans.
Railway traffic managers are seeing to it that there will be no repeti- tion of last Fear's troubles. How OFfar they will succeed in convincing foreign shippers in Harbin, the 'pro- duce centre of North Manchuria, to give Vladivostock another trial, in- stead of shipping to Dairen, remains to be seen.
This year, the Chinese Eastern
