Laurence Edward IMPORTED MEAT SUSPECTED. Broomfield Palk, aged 32, son and heir of Lord Haldon, described as a clerk, appeared on remand ating Croydon charged with stealing from Morland-avenue, Croydon, gold brooch and a thirt, valued at 3178. ed., the property of Mr. Lawrence A. V. Bucknell, a cable engineer.
Falk had previously appeared before the Broomsgrove magistrates, charged with being in possession of articles bolonging to Mr. Bucknell. A police officer then said that Palk had offered to make a statement about other property, which had been taken..
Palk was also charged with steal ing other property from Mr. Buck nell. He pleaded guilty to taking
a certain amount.
A
Detective Bampton produced gold watch and chain, a gold
brooch, a silver eigarette cas, a shirt and a pair of trousers, which he said had been recovered on pawatickets given up by Palk.
Falk, I have no knowledge what ever of the other things. If I had taken all the articles mentioned in the charges I should have admitted
it at once:
Mr. Bucknell said that he return- ed from Brazil on July 10th and found Palk staying at his home. He gave him permission to remain until, he (Palk) went abroad. He left home on August 4th and later heard that Palk had been arrested in Worcestershire with certain pro- |perty of his in his possession.

LONDON, September 5th, Another outbreak of food poison
has occurred in London, and the medical authorities are becom
the latest attack 18 girls living alarmed, says the Daily Mail. at the Green Cross Club, Guilford Street, Bloomsbury, have been at tacked by a malady the symptoms of which are exactly similar to that which recently attacked 73 London policemen,
|
Watch On Victims, Special precautions have been taken to prevent a spread of the disease in caso it should prove to de of a contagious character. Throat
abe have been taken of all the girls in the club and laboratory tests are being made on them..
Observation is being kept on the symptoms of the victims The authorities hope to be able to trace the source of the infection when the laboratory reports are complet- ed in day or two.
Miss G. Hunt, who is temporarily in charge of the club, told a Daily Mail reporter yesterday-
I myself ate bacon at breakfast on Thursday, but have suffered no ill-effects. There was nothing about any of the food to rouse suspicion that it was not quite sound. Until the experts have de eided the cause of the qutbreak it is not possible to say whother the bacon was to blame or not. The authorities are tracing the origin of all the food in the club, qud it is expected that the source of the trouble will be established.

It was believed that the disease was conveyed to the affected police men by means of ham bought in the police canteen. Cases occurred at Bow Street, Rochester Row, and Notting Hill police stations. A con- [HONG KONG METEOROLOGICAL | TJIKINI ^- stable attached to the House of Commons staff died from the dis case, but its cause was never satis factorily cleared up.
All the girls at the Green Cross. Club were taken suddenly ill on Thursday night. Most of them are employed in city offices and several complained of sickness during the afternoon, but it was until they returned in the evening that the malady became serious,

Several girls then collapsed with violent internal pains, and a doctorWeather ... who was called in diagnosed food Bnin poisoning,
Every few minutes fresh victims claimed attention and nurses had to be summoned to attend the patients, many of whom were in agony. As in the case of the poisoned police men, all the patients developed high temperatures and their condition was serious for several hours.
Yesterday, however, it was stated that all the girls were showing signs of improvement. A few had been allowed to get up in their rooms, but some were still in a serious condition.
Dr. Snowden, the medical officer of St. Pancras and other officials spent several hours trying to trace the case of the outbreak It was discovered that all those who had been attacked had eaten bacon, which was part of the breakfast menu on Thursday morning, but others who also ate bacon were un- afected

I crave your indulgence for this statement, which I offer in mitiga-outbreak are being subjected to Wed. 10 tion. I was practically forced by circumstances over which I had little or no patrol to lead a life of deception during my stay at Morland-avenue.
It has been given out, not by DODWELL &
myself, and generally accepted, that I was a man of certain email means, and that I was shortly to join a brother of a mutual friend abroad in business..
This latter arrangement had been considered by myself and many others as definitely fixed, and if only finances had permitted I should have left England weeks ago. Suddenly the whole matter was cancelled by a letter from the gentleman in question...
