The story begins with high adven- turing that would delight any boy's heart. The party set out with a steam launch (it was one of the first boata to be designed by Sir Alfred Yarrow), which was built in sec- tions, and in this they sailed up the Zambesi, had it carried across country, and finally sailed into the southern end of Lake Nyasi. It took a thousand men to carry the boat and the baggage of this party of seven. Caravan after caravan

launch. According to Livingstone the lake extended a hundred and eighty miles, but when they had sailed that distance they found that there was still another hundred and eighty miles to go. Before the voyage was over they had run out of provisions; they were caught in a storm in the middle of the lake, and they had only a few biscuits and sardines to live on.. If one looks at the map of Central Africa one can see traces of their journeys, There are the Livingstone Moun- tains on the north-west of the lake which they discovered and christen- ed; there are a few Scottish place names (the party was very Scot tish), such as Cape Maclean, where they first settled; and there are Swiss Family Robinson names like Deep Bay and Lion Point. The laet name is a reminder of a night when a lion leaped at the tent in which Dr. Laws wag sleeping and tore a whole side of it away.
The First Money, Central Africa was very remote in those days. It was nine years be- fore Dr. Laws was relieved though he had gone out originally for two years only. Two men were sent out to relieve him, but one of them was

Dr. Laws has had the unique opportunity of watching the deve- lopment of this part of Africa from practically the time of its discovery by white men to the present day. Ho was the first to introduce coinage among the natives. In 1870,

That twenty-five pounds was the whole coinage of the country for & great many years.' But things have changed since that time. Bouth Africa, with its steady demand for native labour, has brought a new complication into the simple econo- . mics of those days. "A bay han only to get a note with my signa ture," said Dr. Laws, and off he Tas goes to South Africa, aure of a job, Wed and of a good job.
