New Transmitting Stations There need be no fear that the short wave receiver might prove of little use owing to the scarcity of short wave stations, for anyone who has watched the trend of events will have observed the increasing number of short wave stations now being built and operated through- out the world. The new station in England (5SW) is already trans- mitting, London programmes for the benefit of the overseas eettlements. It is well-known that enthusias tic amateurs, who have kept in

seen the growth of short wave broadcasting. have endeavoured to obtain results with the simple circuit consisting of a detector valve followed by one or two stages of Low Frequency Amplification and employing short wave coils specially designed for the purposes. It was recognŝeed, however, that a circuit which com- menced with a detector valve could not hope to achieve distance with any degree of certainty but, un- fortunately, any attempt to use an HF stage completely upset the receiver and uncontrollable cecilla tion resulted.

A New Achievement.
One of the most remarkable achievements recorded in the deve lopment, of, short wave, reception has been the discovery by the Igranic Electric Co. of Bedford, England, of a certain method of overcoming what hitherto had seemed an inermountable obstacle, and it is now. possible to construct, to the Company's specification, & short wave receiver which employs a stage of High Frequency Ampli- fication with complete stability.
This development has opened 'up remarkable possibilities, as the ad- dition of the HF. stage stabilises reception on the short waves and makes reception over enormous distances a matter of comparative

Mr. Hayden was found guilty. by a commission of using bad langu age and the Bishop of Gloucester ordered him to be inhibited for two years and banished from the parish.
Our airmen dropped thousands of bombs, and dropped them with skill, on important German posi tions and dumps. But they were not favoured by luck, such as help- ed Ludendorff, when on July 21st, 1016, a direct hit started a fire in our largest dump:
Trucks filled with ammunition were soon ablaze and carried the destruction to distant sheds. In all 23 sheds and some 8,000 tons of ammunition were totally des- troyed, a mile of railway track was torn up, s men killed, and Z officers and 21 men injured. Mr. H. A.
