AIR WAR AT THE DARDANELLES.

OUR AMATEUBISHNESS.

The new volume of the official history of the Royal Air Force in the Great War deals with the air operations in the Dardanelles cam- paiga and in France down to the close of the Battle of the Somme. For the Dardanelles it makes usa of the Turkish Official History, which has recently appeared and reveals a good deal that was pre

Many of us can remember the early broadclisting days when *aperhuman efforts were made to receive music over a comparatively short distance with hopelessly in-viously unknown. efficient receivers. Thus it is now known that the mines which caused the Allies such loas in the naval attack were not discovered by the British aircraft because they were not placed in position till the night before that

Says the account published by the Turkish General Staff, it was owing to the heroic determina

tion of our brave naval officers that this bay was sown afreeh with mines, and it is they, who were responsible for the failure of the Allied Fleet..

They were wonderful "days, be-attack. caure each brought news of some fresh development-a great tance bridged or evolved.

Even to-day there is still con- siderable competition among wire- less enthusiasts to achieve a cess with their receivers which will evoke comment among their neigh bours, but it je because so many of us have succeeded in the mat- ter of long distance reception on the ordinary wavelengths that we have lately turned to improvements in the control, design, and repro- duction of broadcast receiveri. To day, it is not so much" how far' but how good."

It was in keeping with the extra- ordinary amateurishness of our operations at the Dardanelles that we began work with only six nero- planes which could work in fair weather and one that could work in bad weather. Our air strength was considerably increased during the operations, and one of its most amazing lents was that it prevent ed the Turkish machines from dis- We have certainly conquered con-covering our preparations for the siderable distances with the normal final evacuation, broadcast wavelengths, but, awing to the limitations attached to these wavelengths, we have been unable to reach out to other and more distant countries with any degree of certainty. A vast field has still to be explored.

The extremely interesting and valuable account given of the air operations in the Battle of the Somme brings out the great suc- cesses of our airmen and the pre- bability that had the weather that autumn of 1910. been normal the Germans would have been decisive-

To those who want to feel the thrill of receiving music and news from "home" there is nothing to-day which will provide this with A greater measure of success than the receiver built essentially for the reception of short waves. Anyone who now builds, his short wave re- ceiver will be in the forefront "ol "s Rreat radio development. New Transmitting Stations There need be no fear that the short wave receiver might prove of little use owing to the scarcity of short wave stations, for anyone who has watched the trend of events will have observed the increasing number of short wave stations now being built and operated through- out the world. The new station in England (5SW) is already trans- mitting, London programmes for the benefit of the overseas eettlements. It is well-known that enthusias tic amateurs, who have kept in

seen the growth of short wave broadcasting. have endeavoured to obtain results with the simple circuit consisting of a detector valve followed by one or two stages of Low Frequency Amplification and employing short wave coils specially designed for the purposes. It was recognŝeed, however, that a circuit which com- menced with a detector valve could not hope to achieve distance with any degree of certainty but, un- fortunately, any attempt to use an HF stage completely upset the receiver and uncontrollable cecilla tion resulted.

A New Achievement.

One of the most remarkable achievements recorded in the deve lopment, of, short wave, reception has been the discovery by the Igranic Electric Co. of Bedford, England, of a certain method of overcoming what hitherto had seemed an inermountable obstacle, and it is now. possible to construct, to the Company's specification, & short wave receiver which employs a stage of High Frequency Ampli- fication with complete stability.

This development has opened 'up remarkable possibilities, as the ad- dition of the HF. stage stabilises reception on the short waves and makes reception over enormous distances a matter of comparative

Mr. Hayden was found guilty. by a commission of using bad langu age and the Bishop of Gloucester ordered him to be inhibited for two years and banished from the parish.

Our airmen dropped thousands of bombs, and dropped them with skill, on important German posi tions and dumps. But they were not favoured by luck, such as help- ed Ludendorff, when on July 21st, 1016, a direct hit started a fire in our largest dump:

Trucks filled with ammunition were soon ablaze and carried the destruction to distant sheds. In all 23 sheds and some 8,000 tons of ammunition were totally des- troyed, a mile of railway track was torn up, s men killed, and Z officers and 21 men injured. Mr. H. A.
