SERIOUS FRAUD ALLEGATION AGAINST MR. L. E. HAYNES.
S.C. TRADE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION AND ITS
FORTY SHROFFS.
INTERESTING DISCLOSURES IN COURT.
"MYSTERIOUS ROBBERY AND SOUNDER FOOTING.".
Over forty Chinese shroffs, now popularly referred to as the "Haynes Regiment of Shroffs," filed the Court room of the Puisne Judge yesterday morning, when three cases were called against Lestic E, Haynes and the South China Trade Protection Associa tion.
In connection with these actions serious allegations of fraud were made Mr. C. A. S. Russ who represented two of the shroffs. It transpired that as the head of the South China Trade Protec- tion Association, Haynes bad engaged over forty shroffs, three of whom were required to deposit 21,000 as security and others had paid in sums ranging from 8300 to 8300. They were each promised monthly salary of $30, but, in most cases, the salaries were said to be two or three months in arrear

It was also mentioned that the Association was practically doing no business, and that Mr. Haynes has now left the Colony. We know and we have other information which we are not in a position to disclose at the moment, but we will take action at the proper" time," Mr. Russ added.
Another disclosure by Mr. Russ was that Mr. Haynes had' He seat a made certain allegations against two of his staff. circular letter to his shroffs in which it. was said that two members of his staff had robbed the Association of large sums of money, and in consequence of that, the Association was embarrassed, The letter went on to say, "This embarrassement, however, doca not by any means, miran that the Company is financially unsound As a matter of fact from the point of view of our business, it is at present on a sounder footing than heretofore."

Mr. Russ said that the whole case was "As nasty a piece of fraud as could possibly happen; and extremely bad for prestige." He asked the Paisne Judge to consider it a bad case. Russ also thought that the case was one that should be made known in Shanghai and elsewhere.

"BENMOHR' FIREMAN GETS LONG SENTENCE.
+
Interesting information about the practices of arms emugglers was disclosed yesterday at the Central Magistracy before Mr. R. E. Lind seil when two Chinese members of the crew of the a.. Benmohr wer charged with the possession of 47 automatic pistola, 9 Lugars, one Smith Weston révolver and 3,500 rounds of ammunition.

Ji-
The 5.5. Benmohr sailed for Takao just after midnight and at 12.30 a.m. yesterday was in Lye- acon Paes. It was then that two European officere, the Chief Officer and the boatswain, saw a fireman buoying a number of packages evidently with the idea of throw ing them overboard to be salved by accomplices. The man was ar rested and a wireless message was sent to the police, the vessel mean- while anchoring in Junk Bay.
A police launch, with Sub-Inspec tor Dorling on board, hastened to the ship and a search revealed the arms and ammunition which figured in the charge.
Mr. T. Murphy, Assistant Direc- tor of Criminal Intelligence, who conducted the prosecution also pro- duced in Couri a number of large air-tight tins, an oil tin and a long eoil of rope. Some of the tips would be used to contain the arms, the others would act as floats so that the consignment conld be easily recovered. The oil by trick- ling to the surface would show the whereabouts of the arms if any- thing went wrong with the floats.
Mr. Murphy said that Lyemoon wae a well favoured spot for this trade in smuggled arms. Syadi. cates were engaged in it, the wea pons being destined for the in- terier.
Defendant was sentenced to three years' hard labour.

Three of them paid over 81,000 each as security, some $500 and others 8300,"
