Organised by the Imperial Gor- West African chief to receive such ernment, it will try to solve many of the legends and stories of mystery that have been linked with the desert for years, Kalahari was the desert in which Livingstone dis- covered an inland sea. It is con- sidered impenetrable to white men owing to the lack of drinking water. But beyond the horizon of sand Machree." there exists, it is believed, fine ranching country in a luxuriant oasis situated in the middle of the sea of sand. This land may be capable of supporting a big white population.
Sir Otori, or Nana (King), as he is known in his native country, has never before been out of West Africa, and London to him is dream. But he received a Daily Mail reporter in his 12-roomed suite at a London hotel with the ease and dignity of a man accus- tomed to interviewing people all
his life.
"How do you do t": he cried from the depths of a big armchair in which he was reclining on a mass "I am very glad
ני.
of silk cushions to meet you."
He showed his pleasure in an unmistakable way, His ebony black face wrinkled in an expansive, amile, and his eyes sparkled. His beautifully white teeth shone in startling contrast to his black face.
Golden Bangles And Chains. He was a regal figure indeed. A golden crown was upon bia head, great golden bangles encircled his arms, and golden chains were Bround his neck. The immaculate dancing pumps and black stocking ed feet that showed beneath his gar- groussomoy coloured poobed
Sir Olori explained that it was the custom of a West African King to interview guests in his crown and ceremonial robes, but after talking for some time te slipped his robe to his waist and sat in his yest. But be still retained his heavy crown.
He burst into laughter at the slightest excuse.
What do you think of an Eag
lish hotel he was asked. "I don't know," he laughed. "I can. not yet understand it. Perhaps I shall in a few days"
He had just returned from a motor-car tour of London. He had Been Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament and driven through Hyde Park and through the City to the Tower of London.
"I imagined what it might be like," he said, "but now I am so surprised that "I don't know, how to express myself. The trafo her: i marvellous. · How careful your drivers are compared with ours. And the policemen are wonderful." On Saturday afternoon Sir Ofori, went to Lard's to watch the cricket. "They bad difficulty in getting me away from there, he said. "What a crowd, and what enthusiasm! im very fond of your English games of Rugby and cricket and 1 have introduced them into my own "country"
With him is his Awoso, or spirit; a 14 years old boy. The Awoso whose real name is Kwaku Adae; wears a golden breastplate and sometimes a crown. On the King's right, look. ing very important, sat Kwadjo Pippin, the Jeschene, or chief of the bodyguard, very picturesque in his robe and a headdress that re- sembled a string of gold and silver matchboxes.

There are no real maps of the desert, and we shall have to depend on stray bushmen, who are report ed to be hostile.
It is the worst time of the year to attempt the expedition, as the water holes will be empty. Qur water supply will therefore bo ear- ried in the motor-lorries.
We are journeying by rail to Mahalapye, and thence striking "westward with the motors as far as possible. Later we shall turn northward to the Victoria Falls on the Zambesi River.
