GOLF NOTES.

[By R. H. H)

It was a great pity that anyone should actually play golf at Fanling last week-end. The course pure aesthetic joy, to the eye. The

greens were wonderfully true and neat, and every fairway seemed to have been only recently cut. I have very rarely seen the course looking xa Woll Naturally one set out under such circumstances with the noblest and most optimistic inten- tions and for the first few holes

everything went excellently. There neemed, after all, to be no conceis- able reason for missing shots with perfect lies and greens. Very soon, however, shots which ought to have found the middle of the green just crawled up to the edge, and one became more feeble and more in-

accurate as the heat took every bit

of vitality.

The sight of a man physically tired out attempting to play as though he were fresh und unwearied is rather pathetic. To the man himself it is merely intensely annoy. ing. And thus those who set out to play the more restrained tired man game came off a good deal better than those who refused to believe, in spite of the evidence of their senses, that they had really had enough at the end of about six holes. Armed with card and pencil. and carried round-clubless in n chair, one would have manufactur. ed with appareat. fairness a very rospectable score, for the state of the course should hardly have allow- ed anything elsä. The first round proper of the Open Singles Championship of the Colony has now been completed. Out of the 32 ties played there have been surprisingly few upsets-seven or eight at the most, and only five walk-overs.

Two more of last season's last eight have received their quietus, namely, Holland and Dobbie, the defeat of the former at the hands of D. Rumjabn being quite unex pected. Another surprise was fur nished by the defeat of a veteran bowler, in David Muir by youngster in

But if Fanling for once has raged like a lion, Happy Valley still has more lamb-like characteris pics, and there seems always to be a cooling breeze and an occasional oharitable cloud,

even од the hottest days. The turf too, fortu. nately, is worth its meed of praise | for many a day, if only it can keep in something like its present con- dition Thanks presumably to the doods, it is almost seaside in its nature and consistency, and the lics are close and light rather than thick and spongy. The ball doës not very often sit right up asking to be hit, but it can be hit all the better for that. A cicek really enters into its own here, in prac tice, which may or may not mean in theory, but actually there is not very much room for it in the play- ing of a round.

The only trouble about Happy Valley at present is caused by the jong grasses which bow the head before the mowing machine, and. stand up again after its passing) hone the worse for their obeisance. Actually one should be able to ignore them entirely in play, they are far too flexible to make any real difference to the playing of a shot, but the perpetual swish and tap of their stems shaft or club head becomes extraordinarily irritating, and distracts one's at- tention with unfailing regularity. In the case of wooden clubs, with their longer- proximity to the ground, a few really perverse bits! of grass are really in their element, and certainly a disproportionately large number of shots are missed from this rather trivial cause.
