lieved, is a record and the master has been the recipient of many congratulations from his collegues in the Mercantile Marinë.

According to the stories which passengers had to relate when they landed from the Jervis Bay shortly before noon that day, the my's- terious "mutiny" on the high Best was little more than a storm in a teacup..

The point of outstanding impor- tance is that there Was no mutiny at all events not in the sense of an uprising on the part of the crew. The Craw throughout, apparently, behaved admirably, did not in the least sympathise actively or passively | with the eight stowaways, support ed Capt. Daniel and his officers in their efforts to overpower the eight and were not for a single moment under a cloud,

The full story of the eventful voyage, pieced together from the often contradictory statements made by the passengers, is ua fol- lows (says the Ceylon Observer), Shortly after Fremantle had been left a search of the ship was made and revealed the presence of eight stowaways..

To Feed With The Passengers. Among them was a half-csato Cuban who seems to have been a quarrelsome, unpleasant and alto gether objectionable man.

When the stowaways were found they were brought before the. Chief Ofi- cer who gave them light duties- such as cleaning the brass work to perform. They were given a cabin and permitted to take their food with the passengers, being given precisely the same fare.

However, it seemя that this amazingly generous treatment did not satisfy the stowaways. Led by the half-caste Cuban they all flatly declined to do any work whatever. It is also said that they habitually used filthy language, they were warned that if they declined to work and continued to make them selves objectionable they would be placed under restraint.

The Danca.

Matters came to a head on Tues day night. It seems that the passengers were having a dance on the promenade deck, on which the stowaways were not allowed. On this occasion, however, they invaded the promenade deck, forced their un welcome attentions upon several of the lady passengers and demanded dances with, some say, threats.

The Captain gave orders that the eight stowaways were to be arrested and placed under close confinement in the isolation ward. Several members of the crew were told off to carry out this order. None of the crew had firearms though some carried life preservers. The slow- aways put up a fierce resistance the half-caste being particularly violent. A hand-to-hand fight, which, some 393, lasted about a quarter of an hour, took place. In the course of this struggle hand- cuffs were applied to at least some of the stowaways, but whether all eight were so dealt with is uncer- tain. As a last resort the hosepipe had to be turned upon the desper ados who were literally washed down the stairs into the chip's cell which was filled seycral inches deep in water in the process.

Four ex-Naval men volunteered to keep watch over the prisoners but, during the night, they suc ceeded in breaking out. It is be lieved that they discovered in the cell à six" foot crow bar, with the aid of which they broke the hand- cuffs, smashed in the door, assault- ed the ex-Naval men on guard and made good their escape.

Three were later found in the passengers' quarters and one in" that portion of the ship which is reserved as sleeping quarters for the stewardesses. The four men were overpowered, again handcuff- ed and returned to the cell where the strictest guard was kept. over them and they were placed under double hatches.. It is further re- ported that a microphone was placed at the foot of the stairs close to the cell so that the con- versation of the eight men could be overheard from above. In this way it was learned that they were planning to set fire to the ship and it was then that the Captain re- peated his call for aid.

As soon as the fire was noticed by the volunteer passengers on watch the alarm was given, the fre hose was again brought into play and the stowaways had enough cold water in about five minutes to damp their ardour for several HONG KONG MITEÒROLOGICAL hours. A second attempt at in- cendiarism is also reported to have takes place and the desperados ne tually broke up the woodwork of the cabin to provide the means to Carry out their plans.

Loyalty Of The Crew, Ona interesting fact which has emerged is that 400 passengers sign- ed a letter which had been drafted by a Committee of Passengers. This letter was addressed to the Captain and stated that. undersigned" had been much per- turbed by the false rumours which had been circulating in the press) concerning the loyalty of the crew of the Jervis Bay. So far as the signatories to the letter were com- cerned they resented these rumours sines the crew of the Jervis Bay had loyally supported the Captain and his officers throughout. Not a 10 m 30 44m 7 64 one member of the crew had dis- played the slightest active sym Wed: 11 pathy for the stowaways who had been the cause of all the trouble. Thar, On the contrary many of the crew had been overheard to express the Fri. strongest condemnation of the stowaways and their conduct. The Bat letter expresses the opinion that the Captain and his afficers handled San. “â delicate" situation with leniency,

tect, discretion and ability and, in fen. 16 so doing, had been loyally support- ed by the crew,

Simultaneously torn up bedding and pillows, blazing furiously, were thrown out through the porthole. Evidently the stowaways were find- ing that, in their desire to make it hot for everyone else, they were making things distinctly too hot for themselves. Later investiga tions revealed that they had even gone so far as to tear up most of their clothing in order to keep the bonfire going and it is supposed that the object of "throwing the blazing mass out of the porthole was either to alarm the passengers (Continued on riest Column).
