The principal front is 1,000 feet in length, "a varied and irregular line of towers and battlements, arched doorways, mullioned windows, cor. bela, and machicolations, with a massive turreted centre and fine Gothic porch," and "a beautifully proportioned spire surmounting the chapel." "This Gothic chapel has been regarded as Wyatt's, master. piece.

LEPROSY NOT CONTAGIOUS?

U.S. PROFESSOR'S IMPORT-

BERKELEY, California,

June 20th. Leprosy, dread disease which isolates its victims in so-called "colonies of the living dead," is probably not at all contagious, 'no- cording to findings made public by this Lairersity of Californis medical department, says a United Press message.

These findings, it is stressed, are purely tentative and do not mean that the university definitely an nounced that the disease was dis- covered to be non-contageous. They tend to bear ont previous theories that while leprosy is infectious it is not contageous.

The report embodies concusion reached by Dr. E. L. Walker, pro- fessor of tropical medicine, follow ing fourteen months research in Honolulu and on the island of

Molokai, where the leprosy colony of the Hawaiian Islands located. His study included both laboratory research and investigations among 130 victing of the disease. The research was conducted at the in- vitation of the United States Public Health Service.

Dr. Walker's study will be con- tinued and augmented by other scientists and if his findings are sustained by further research they are expected to result in changes of vast scientific, economic and governmental importance.

The two basic conclusions of Dr. Walker's report were:

These bacteria enter the body in cuts or wounds about the feet, and are not transmitted by the leper, despite the cries of "un- clean" which have driven him as an outcast from society, since the dawn of written history.

Dr. Walker stated that" the ne- tinomyces are very dificult to study, chiefly because leprosy is found only in human beings.and it is therefore impossible to try the or ganisms on any animal. It is con- idered too dangerous to experi ment with them on humans.

When grown in the laboratory the bacteria assume a different shape and form with each generation, and are seldom identical with, the or-

genism as it is found in the human

tissue of loper victims.

Bearing out his contention that

the antinomyces cause leprosy, Dr.

Walker pointed out that the disease is found chiefly in countries where the natives go barefoot. They pick it up from the soil, he believes.
