MR. S. LILLICRAP'S STATEMENT.

SMUGGLING SUGGESTION AND OVERBEARING OFFICIALS,

FILTHY PLACE OF CONFINEMENT.

The following is the statement by Mr. Lillicrap of the occurrences which led to his arrest and detention for one night in a Canton prison. In his opinion the men who seized the onset of wine and spirit consigned to him from the s. “ Kwazigtung were actuated by a desire to get the informer reward. "On Tuesday the 3rd July there were 38 cases wines and spirits on board the L. Krangtung from Hong Kong consigned to Messra. T. E. Griffith, Ltd.

This firm instructed me to take delivery of this consignment for them.

In accordance with my usual practice (which is also the practice of all firms imparting wines to Shameen) I made out the usual Chinese Maritime Customs Applica- tions, and also applied to the Kwangtung Wines Tax Department for permission to discharge the con- signment from Kwangtung to the

Shameen.

As I have handled many con- sigaments of wines and spirits of my own and several other wines and spirits firms on the Shameen, I am working in perfect harmony with this department, and ther
